OK, so I was just looking at the Minecraft.net page for the Phantom, and noticed that there was an old, unused red version of it, and as it was said that it looked to much like the Nether, it got me thinking.... What if there was a special type of Phantom, with similar spawn rates to, say, a Magma Cube, that only spawned in the Nether? And what if this new Phantom used the old Red Phantom Texture? Well, Ladies and Gentlemen, Nerds and Geeks, Vindicators and Creepers, I present to you, THE FIRE PHANTOM!!! (This is the part where you applaud). The Fire Phantom only spawns in the Nether, and has only slightly higher spawn rates than previously mentioned Magma Cubes, uses the old, unused Red Phantom Texture, and even has little Fire Particles that come off its wings as it flies. It does slightly higher damage than the regular Phantom, about 0.5 Hearts, and when you get attacked by one, there's a 50% chance it will light you ablaze. Basically, The Fire Phantom is to The Phantom as Magma Cubes are to Slimes, Wither Skeletons are to Skeletons, and Zombie Pigmen are to Zombies. Basically, what The Nether is to The Overworld. The Fire Phantom is just as fast, just as mean, and twice as fiery as its Overworld counterpart, The Phantom!
So, uh, what do you think? Don't worry if you don't like it, I can take the criticism, and the hate. But hey, if you like it, maybe you could tell Mojang about it, then you could take credit for it. And I'll just be here, in the dust, looking at a Fire Phantom in the face, about it get lit ablaze. Sigh, why don't I have any friends?.... Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Hmm, not sure, I guess we'll have to wait until we see what The Phantom drops when 1.13 actually hits full release. That way we'd have something to compare it to. Like how Magma Cubes drop Magma Cream, which is partly the Slimeballs drops by Slimes. Although, if all else fails, Fire Charges. Anyways, glad you like it! Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Force me to play/combat it and we're 180 degrees out of phase.
The name of the game is MineCraft, want CombatCraft make it a separate game and optional.
Minecraft is just as much as a building game as it is an Exploration and Combat game. I think this "Not Minecraft-y" argument is getting way too out of context. "Not Minecraft-y" should be used to describe things that generally don't fit in the game. Examples would be spaceships, modern-day guns, and cars. After all, the game is set in medieval times. But, it seems that people use this argument for literally anything they don't agree with. Remember when most of the fanbase deemed the piston "not minecraft-y?" Yeah, and then it became one of the best features in the entire game. You could make all types of stuff with them. More recently, the glazed terra-cotta was also named this way. Some people even quit the game! And now combat. Whenever someone proposes an improvement to the combat system, or a new enemy that is ever-so-slightly more difficult than other mobs, you could sometimes see people saying that it's a bad suggestion because the game is about building, and not action, or combat. Trust me, it happened to me as well with my Enderdragon overhaul. While I could see why they would say it with that one, this one is literally a flying enemy that lights you on fire! What's so bad about something as simple as that? Combat is such an underdeveloped feature, and it seems the devs are starting to pick it back up again with the new trident. Like I said earlier, Minecraft is just as much a game about building as it is about Combat and Exploration. If it wasn't then why would they even bother with such in the first place?
@ Shroom_Kid and all those that need to be constantly entertained;
I shouldn't reply. When I do it's claimed I'm attacking, or off topic and I get nicked, but it's ok when it's done to me!
In my opinion Notch had it right... There was singleplayer, primarily for exploration and construction, and there was multiplayer, where you could beat the snot out of your buddy, attack everything that moved, and the player was constantly entertained. I also know any single person wanting combat could play multiplayer and get her/his fill of combat/entities.
I do not need nor do I want a constant barrage of entities that must be dealt with, to hold my attention. I do not need a new block every time a new version is released! I understand those that are creative and construct objects do need additional blocks and I can toss new blocks aside as I do most blocks once I've mined a certain quantity.
I may never understand why a game with the name MineCraft has become so overrun with combat!
I think the vast majority of those that purchased MineCraft when I did and played singleplayer are disappointed with where it has gone and rarely play today. Return the game to Singleplayer and Multiplayer versions and everyone wins.
I donot wish to impact how you, or anyone, plays their game! Do anything you desire with a Mod and we all can play the game as each of us wishes without forcing anyone to play as you or I think it should be!
Maybe the answer is for Mojang to offer Mods rather than versions! They could peruse these postings and offer any Mod they feel would be popular.
And how exactly do you consider an enemy that lights you on fire to be considered, ehem, a “constant of barrage of enemies”. Plus, the Nether is literally hell. Why shouldn’t it be dangerous? Also, stop bringing up the name. That’s like saying the main protagonist of The Legend of Zelda should be Zelda because her name is in the title.
I'd say the greatest barrior to the fire phantom is that the niche of "flying nether critter that sets you one fire" is already occupied by the ghast (and – to a lesser degree – by the blaze).
Reading something else due to being called away I came up with an idea for an alternate use of the red texture/fire phantom...
perhaps these result when a normal MobB suffers an attck which would set it on fire (flame and fire aspect being the most obvious examples).
If this attack doesn't kill it outright, it transforms on the next tick to the Fire version that includes the enhanced stats mentioned in the OP (including fire immunity), but becomes susceptible to damage by water (rates similar to endermen?).
While this would normally make shooting one with a flame bow a poor idea, doing so in a rainstorm becomes quite effective thus adding some situational complexity to the combat system.

With all due respect, I didn't say it would be a barrage of enemies. The Fire Phantom would have similar spawn rates to that of a Magma Cube, of which they aren't the most common Nether Mob, Zombie Pigmen are. That being said, you'd only be running into them every so often, not getting barraged like you do with normal Phantoms. In fact, I only suggested the Fire Phantom simply because I like seeing new creatures in the game. The fact is though, that as the Phantom is a Hostile Mob, so therefore should be the Fire Phantom. You don't have to fight them if you don't want to. Just use Peaceful Difficulty! That way, the only thing you have to worry about as far as a use for your sword/axe/bow is your less than friendly neighbor's Shulkers. (They are great for security after all). In fact, just play Creative Mode if you like creating, Survival if you like Combat, and Adventure Mode if your playing a downloaded map that requires it. I don't even use mods, not even resource packs, simply because I happen to like getting new updates every so often. Although, if you really don't like the new combat, just use PC 1.8, or the Console Edition. Neither of those have the new mechanics. (Ironically, the Wii U version has the new horse model, but it's not even out yet, weird, but true). Really, it's just a new creature, which means a new spawn egg, which makes me happy because I collect spawn eggs. I literally have three separate Mob Vaults in my main world for storing every single Spawn Egg in game. (note: I would be holding the Drowned, Tropical Fish, Salmon, Cod, Pufferfish, Turtle, and Phantom Spawn Eggs in them, but unfortunately, my main world has a small problem with the snapshots. Every time I leave an area, I come back to find that all the Redstone doesn't work anymore, all the mobs are frozen, and all my fences have separated into individual posts with no connections between them, and I'm running 1.12.2 as of right now on it. That's noteworthy, because I created a separate Test World for Snapshots in 1.12.2 and then updated to the snapshots, but it works and main world doesn't. Then again, my main world was originally created in 1.8, hmm, maybe that has something to do with it?)..... Anyways, I'm actually going to submit a bug report on my glitches, so I will talk to you later. Oh, and I almost forgot, I also have a Book of Monsters in-game that I'd be happy to upload screenshots of so you all can have it yourselves if you want it. There's even classes for each monster, (i.e. Stoker Class, Fear Class, Tidal Class, Boss Class, Mystery Class, and Arthropod Class). Anyways, goodbye..... Now, how should I go about getting that NPC Spawn Egg......???....? Rockatoa, Brickticks out!

Oooh, me likely!!! And maybe that's the way they automatically spawn in the Nether too, so that if you light them on fire in the Overworld, or find them naturally in the Nether, then they'll be Fire Phantoms!!! One thing though, will they still have the Fire Particles coming off the wings?
I think fire phantoms should spawn at the same conditions of regular phantoms (insomnia) only they spawn if you are in the nether instead of the overworld. When in the end you'd get regulars phantoms.
Force me to play/combat it and we're 180 degrees out of phase.

The idea of fire phantom is cool. If you want to focus only on mining then create a suggestion of ore.
If you think only about mining, what some people say will be: Minecraft will literally end.

This seems interesting. What kind of drops would it have?
