Allow players to craft a winged chest plate from their choice of chest plate, (Leather, Gold, Mail, Iron, Diamond) and an Elytra via a shapeless recipe. This would give the chest plate a separate wear bar above the chest plate's own wear bar which would show the wear of the Elytra. If the chestplate gets destroyed, then so does the Elytra, but if the Elytra gets destroyed the chest plate would not. Repairing a winged chest plate with the material which corresponds to the material of the chest plate would repair only the chest plate's wear unless the chest plate is made of leather, in which case repairing said chest plate would repair both wear bars according to how much it would have repaired the respective single item. Repairing a winged chest plate with leather would always repair it's Elytra as usual.
Why It Should Be Implemented:
Because not having this makes one of the hardest items to obtain in the game essentially useless. Who would go out adventuring with an Elytra on when they can opt for a nice diamond chest plate? Currently Elytras are nothing more than incredibly hard to obtain toys and nothing more. Adding this feature would add yet another layer of depth to the armor system, which is always nice.
About Balancing:
One of the hardest items to obtain in the game should not be balanced with items that take 30 minutes to get, there's just no reason for it. Having both a chest plate and an Elytra is definitely not unbalanced. This is essentially claiming that using armor and a sword at the same time is unbalanced. It's sort of absurd to limit the vanilla game just because some people think it could give players an advantage in certain scenarios. In a combat scenario, it would not make sense to have an Elytra when a chest plate is available. On the other side of the same coin, in most other scenarios, it makes no sense to have a chest plate and not an Elytra. As long as Elytras are available to all players who are willing to put in the work to obtain them, there is no need to balance it with an unrelated piece of gear. You practically need to beat the game in order to obtain an Elytra, so it should be something worth the space it takes up in my chest. This will not effect PvP due to the fact that PvP servers could simply not allow this item to be created.
If anything, elytra are unbalanced at the moment. We really don't need to be able to chestplates and elytra at the same time; that is part of "balance," though it doesn't make it much less OP.
Agree fully with wolftopia. There are so many arguements against how overpowered elytras are. The whole reason an elytra takes the chestplate slot was to make the player weaker. Plus, I would much rather use an elytra in a battle scenario when I'm on high ground. They're good for escaping and travelling obsurdly quickly. No support.

Try actually reading my post and explaining why I'm wrong. I've already covered your entire argument.

Yeah, but nobody ever won a battle by running away, also, servers are fully capable of disabling this and you don't need to use it. At the end of the day, not having this feature is a pain for end-game players who don't care about PvP and one command away from any server being able to disable it. The real reason why you and Wolftopia do not want this feature is because you are only thinking of one dimension of a multi-dimensional issue.

this two points seem to contradict each other ...

no, the layer of depth in the armor system is that you need to make a choice: armor or utility? "one item more to craft" is not the same as depth. forcing the player to make choices, this is depth. the player should not have an item which is obviously best in slot
About Balancing:
[...] As long as Elytras are available to all players who are willing to put in the work to obtain them, there is no need to balance it with an unrelated piece of gear.
lets make the bow craftable with a sword to have weapon that hits ultra hard in meele and range - it would not be op cause everyone could have one -.-
it would be OP because without one you'd be in a huge disadvantage. to make you understand balancing:
in skyrim there are swords, axes and maces. while swords are faster they are weaker than maces so in overall they are equally strong. the player can make a choice depending on his personal preference. would swords be now faster and stronger than maces there would be no point in picking not a sword -> it would be over powered.
in MOBAs there are different classes, if a tank would do the same damage as an damage dealer and also have as much utility as a supporter, why would anyone not pick this tank?
currently players need to make a choice: armor or utility - depending on skill and personal preference (note: its part of skill to know when to switch elytra with armor). your suggestion would take away that choice, taking away depth, forcing players to this piece of gear because its the obvious best in slot which would mean its OP.

I think minecraft armors are not diverse enough : the only ones wich do not follow the "it absorbs more damages than the previous one" rule are gold stuff and... elytras.
Nowadays, it is indeed better to have a diamond chestplate, but it does not mean we should give up upon this balance system. To my mind, the devs should add a way to upgrade elytras with ores (like angel in the x-men) so it could be less pitiful compared to the diamond armor.

As long as this thread is back, I agree with Wolftopia's statement. Elytron allow for quick getaways and significantly improved mobility at the cost of survivability. Saying the idea is balanced because it's rare makes no sense since once you have it, you have it and can use it. And there's no challenge in crafting two already powerful items together to form an even more powerful item. This is also Mojang's official stance on the idea as of July 2018:
Elytra combined with chest plate suggestions: Part of the tradeoff of having an Elytra is it takes up half your armor. (12 July 2018)
What I'm Suggesting:

Elytras are very useful especially when not in PvP for travelling and sometimes building. I was just arguing with your point.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
