I am aware that Notch has added some lovely types of trees to minecraft, and I hope for more to come soon. But don't you think that with new releases should come harder trees to find? Releasing new ores in too great an amount would make mining a very complicated task, so why not make more types of precious materials above ground? The different types of trees would not only look different, but would require stronger axes to chop, and would most likely have much stronger wood, resisting to explosions/use more. They could also grow in a different way that others, and would have a very small chance of growing from saplings. I can imagine the forests speckled with a variation of yews and maples, along with the stronger and more useful wood they provide.
I'd be interested in different wood types making different colored planks, to add some visual variety. I think I'll fire up a photoshop later of what I have in mind.
Yeah, perhaps each type of wood would be better at something? for example pine wood could be better at cooking/smelting things.
I never considered that, mostly focusing on building. But yeah, having classes such as hardwoods and softwoods, which cooked, built, and behaved differently would be interesting.
My photoshop isn't working at the moment, but I've got some suggestions anyway. Just use your imagination. keep in mind the color is for both logs and planks from that tree.
"Wood" (current, generic tree)
Size: Small
Color: current / dull gray tint
Most common wood and plank type, but also the dullest.
Oak
Size: Medium
Color: Light Brown
Oak always comes in larger trees and are fairly common.
Redwood
Size: large
Color: Dark Red tint
Basically the same as the current redwood, only larger, and its blocks share its red color.
Birch
Size: Small
Color: .... eh, real birch doesn't look that different from other woods, not sure about this one. Maybe I'll just fudge it and make it the white wood.
Willow
Size: medium/large
Color: green tinge
Willow trees are often near water, and make swamp biomes stand out more. The leaves will always have a drooping effect.
Maple
Size: medium/large
Color: orangish tinge with red leaves
Maple trees will allow for autumn forests, as well as another color for wood/planks.
Cherry
Size: Small/medium
Color: light red with white leaves
A lighter alternative to redwood, and has the added bonus of producing fruit. Also a nice spring-time tree.
Mahogany
Size: Medium
Color: dark brown
Mahogany is the second-rarest tree type, reflecting the actual rarity of the tree.
Ebony
Size: Medium
Color: Black
Super-rare wood used in decorations.
*If you're worried about adding trees taking up block IDs, don't be. Wood, birch and redwood already use the same ID with different data types.
Not all trees are turned into planks. Some can be used for building materials by themselves.
There also could be wood tiers as well, for some trees don't need to be flammable or easily destroyed by explosions.
Well i guess im wrong then.
I'm not disregarding the idea, I just don't care.
No, i think that would be birch, seeing as birch is an ideal firestarter.
