Wouldn't this make using elytra's redundant? A minecart, redstone, and some stairs are easy to make for a late game player. Once you find an elytra everyone would just make planes instead of using the elytra.
Most importantly, this would be extremely unbalanced. Right now there is not way to fly in survival, you can only glide with the elytra. Adding in complete flight would be overpowered.
Lastly, I don't think planes fit in minecraft's medival fantasy setting.

What are the controls? Does it just go a certain height and then start gliding from there? If so, what's the point, seeing as you could always just nerd pole up to a certain height and start going from there with a normal elytra?
Also what are the stairs in the crafting recipe for?

Sounds fit for a mod, but not for vanilla. Besides, you could just make a slime block flying machine. There are some pretty good tutorials for how to build them if you want planes.
The plane would be very fun to used and what do you think about this?
I think this would ruin the game and not fit in any way whatsoever.
A game with swords and potions should not have planes. This also makes elytras pointless. No support.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
And no support. Not only, as others have pointed out, does this make elytras useless, but it kinda distorts the weird super early industrial revolution/medieval type thing that is Minecraft's theme.
Minecraft is supposed to be medieval, so that means we won't get any of that fancy technology like cars, planes, guns, phones, etc.
I don't see a reason for a plane if we have the Elytra.
No Support.
Which can be fixed with mods, the game is a sandbox game, which means it can be anything anyway, doesn't have to be Medieval, alot of people build modern stuff, mainly cause medieval is limited.
But OP, Just use mods if you want a plane, A vanilla plane made by mojang would most likely be awful, leave it to mods, modding does it already. Try MCHeli.
Thought: allow lengthened boats with furnaces, and use paper to create balloons.
With these two parts you could craft a primitive airship not dissimilar to a tiny version of the 1852 Giffard dirigible. This would be more vulnerable to attack than the Elytra and would get no benefits from rockets, but would offer proper, if slow, flight if supplied with coal. Otherwise it'd simply gently drift to the ground and be unable to move. Controls would be like a boat's.
Ok so we have 2 way to transport (By Boat and Minecart)
But i believe MC should have planes
Here is how it going to work.
The crafting recipe is Elytra at the top and a minecart below and some redstone dust and 2 stair
And to make the plane work you need Coals to power it up and you need to make the plane run like 10 blocks to fly up.
Also unlike Boat and Minecarts who drop itself, The plane will crash and it won't drop itself or the items so you need to be careful.

What about elytra + starless firework rockets? It looks a lot like flight to me.
I do agree with you, though, that this doesn't really fit Minecraft's theme.
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
