Roughly 95% of Minecraft players hate Villagers and would be very happy if they were removed. If you are one of the 5% who actually like villagers, copy this into your signature and hope it never happens. ~EnderDude124
I overwhelmingly support this bunch of ideas, unfortunately mojang thinks that putting more stupid mobs will make the game more interesting, but hostile mobs are more annoying than they are challenging, honestly having smarter NPC to interact with would bring some fresh air to the game

Under the powder chest
Villagers do need a massive AI improvement, but they also need some degree of self-preservation in order to fulfill the appearance of intelligence.
Guards (be they anything from blue-shirt patrolmen with swords, to guys with chainmail shirts and bows, to musketeers or other advanced suggestions) are glaringly missing from the villages. Iron Golems might somewhat fulfill this role, but they can't enter houses, move painfully slowly, and are helpless against mobs that spawn on any roofs whatsoever- especially Skeletons, who attack them on sight.
If you had at least one guard in every village, you could fill a gaping hole in the perceived competence of villagers (after all, who would want to settle in the middle of nowhere with no defense whatsoever?) Additionally, you could get chainmail from these as trades; that'd make this tier of armor somewhat less unused. Finally, they'd justify having Armorers and Weaponsmiths, which are already present in the game.

I'm interested in Villagers.
The Civilized Update: Making Villagers and Illagers more influential, and Villages lively, better places.

In the suggestion I said that Iron Golems would be faster, though I do see your point. I do not think Iron Golems should be eliminated as protection for villagers.
What if Iron Golems were the primary defense (and were of course faster), and the Fletcher would act as a secondary defense, shooting mobs with a bow so that there is a ranged defense within the village? I think Blacksmiths should also pull out an iron sword to defend themselves if cornered.
building iron golems. I don't have much experience with computers, but I
can many ways in which that could catastrophically glitch.
Other than that, support.
Okay, when I say they "build" the Iron Golems, I mean one of the villagers (preferably a blacksmith) walks into an area that could fit the Iron Golem summoning thing, and then makes the blocks magically appear for an instant, and then the Iron Golem is created. I don't mean anything extremely complex.
