I like making big builds in survival. I greatly enjoy collecting massive quantities of resources and then creating awesome things. (Current build is going to take ~300 stacks of quartz blocks as well as 15 stacks of sea lanterns for example). I play on a vanilla server so switching to creative for flight isn't an option. Right now I end up using dirt which is easy and cheap until it comes time to get rid of it. Then I always seem to end up falling off or digging the block I'm standing on, or leaving a couple random orphaned blocks near the top of a beautiful tower.
I would like to propose a scaffold block. Made out of planks and sticks (even out of planks and iron ingots) it would be placable just like dirt. The difference would be that you could have an "anchor" block that you start with. Then, when you are done, you would just break the anchor block and like a chorus tree, all the other scaffold blocks would break and drop.
That would revolutionize the whole building experience in minecraft! I agree.
Imagine how much time you can save building both in survival and creative!
Although if this were a real thing and you use this in a 300+ block tower, don't you think that it can create too much lag when you destroy the "anchor" of the scaffolding causing a lot of falling items when you're done? That wouldn't be great in servers.
I guess the developers will find a way to handle that.
Maybe they make a limit to the number of scaffolds that be attached to 1 anchor block. 64 would be a very reasonable limit.
There are already things that can cause extreme lag on a server - like making a TNT chain or some red stone creations. I think that servers figure that out just fine. Like, I used to play on a server that "requested" only single TNT detonations. Most people were absolutely ok with that.
These should also be climbable. Maybe they can have a ladder in the recipe.

Sand works well if you just want to go up. But, if you want to go across - then it doesn't work. Let's say you want to add upside down stairs as decoration along a wall of a castle. If it's higher than I can reach from the ground (and I didn't think to add them when I was working on that layer), I have to basically ring the castle with dirt a few blocks from the wall. Then, after, I have to dig it all up which is a pain.

I like this idea. Have you considered using sand to pile up, and then using the torch trick though?
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
