This idea came to me when thinking about adding a sewer disposal system to my world, in which I could dispose of items, have them flow to one central collection point, and sort through them at a later time once I return to my central base. Of course the problem with that is that since it's not on SMP and there isn't a serverful of people to check the collection point, my items would disappear. I have also faced a similar issue regarding outdoor mob traps.
So my idea to counter this would be a placable box item, with the purpose of eternally keeping any item dropped in it from vanishing. The recipe might be as follows:
[]
[]
And here's a mockup of a potential design I made before I really put much thought into the idea. Instead of this, it would most likely just be a cube with the top texture appearing as an opening.
The item would essentially work as a small chest, except that any item that rests on top of the block would be automatically put inside. If the box is full, items will simply stay on top. It would be right-clicked and opened just like a standard chest.
I think Minecraft really needs more items that support industrial & mechanical concepts, and something allowing players to send items away and not worry about losing them could really open a lot of doors. Not to mention I have a fascination with hidden transportation tunnels and would love to be able to pursue that in Minecraft.

If people like the idea I may take it to GetSatisfaction as well. So tell me what you think!
Thats a really cool idea! :smile.gif: It could make some cool mechanisms as well if it was turned on/off using redstone currents
This is MUCH better than most suggestions like it. I would normally tell you to use the search bar, but this is just too much better than the other ones.
Imagine a minecart with a drop box inside. Your mobtraps have tons of items at the collection points. You get a powered cart and stick in some coal. It pushes the drop box cart past all the collection points, before looping back and stopping before you, full of string and bones.

Santa gave me a chest full of coal. However, thanks to undergroud preasure, in 10,000 years, I have a ton of diamonds!.
If anyone can think of any flaws/exploits regarding this idea, please put them forth. The only one I could think of was gaining mass resources from a mob spawner, but that's where my idea came in for it to act similar to a chest rather than just as spot on which loose items would not vanish.
Yes, it works like a chest, with the added feature of being able to drop items on top and have them automatically be put inside, so items can be stored without your presence. Players could then set up item transport systems that drop items into the box, without worrying about the items vanishing.

That sounds pretty neat for mining upwards. Put dropboxes at the bottom and when stuff falls down, you don't have to immediately go down to pick it up.
