We all know, the only way of getting leather when your cow farm only has 5-10 cows and you need 45 for bookshelves, it is torturous. Just going 5000 blocks to get enough leather. So, here i have easier ways of getting leather!
1. Increase cow drops:- A cow drops 0 to 2 leather pieces. Lets make it 1 to 3. It might sound like not a big thing, but, on average, it cuts the number of cows needed by HALF.
2. Disarranging extra saddles:- A new crafting recipie:- 1 saddle ---> 9 leather. Fair deal if you dont like horses/have railcraft mod to let you go 25 m/s without horses.

Totally Disagree. there's no shortage of ways of getting leather..
You can get leather from Rabbits hides (2x2 hides = 1 leather) or Killing Horses.
You can go exploring for villages.. these 'usually' have a library where you can get books/bookshelves
2. Disarranging extra saddles:- [/b]A new crafting recipie:- 1 saddle ---> 9 leather. Fair deal if you dont like horses/have railcraft mod to let you go 25 m/s without horses.
I don't totally disagree with this.. just the quantity.
'Most' crafting recipes I've seen for saddles use only 3-5 leather.. 9 leather seem too much to get back
I would also suggest a crafting (or de-crafting) recipe to be Saddle & shears & and that the shears deteriorate each time you de-craft/use them. The problem I see though is how'd you'll get both the leather & shears back from a crafting table ?
I would be okay with this. There isn't anything challenging about getting Leather, it is just a boring slog for books and the basically the worst armor in the game.
But about getting the bookshelves, personally if I start a simple wheat field and wrangle some cows by the time I am actually ready to start enchanting (have a decent amount of diamonds and supplies for the table), I've usually gotten enough cows through breeding just by visiting them every so often.
That is of course when I play casually, if I am rushing for enchanted gear I do wind up with 30 levels and all the supplies needed except the leather (and to a lesser extent the paper which is easier to mass produce).

The main problem I have with leather is that it seems way too difficult to get early game to get enough of it to make leather armor, and so that class of armor is largely ignored. Because of that, I agree with point #1; leather should be at the very least a guaranteed drop.
I don't think #2 is a good idea. As saddles have no crafting recipe, it seems to be against the game mechanics to be able to disassemble it. Even if it wasn't, nine seems a bit much and it should give four.
The moderators don't like idea farming on this forum. I'd remove point #3 if you don't want to risk this thread being locked.
I don't have any real problem with point 3. The OP submitted fleshed out ideas so them asking for other alternatives is fine. It is more an issue when the OP simply says "I would like more mobs, what should they be?" without actually suggesting a mob themselves.
Here the OP poses a problem, presents their solutions, and asks for potential other solutions if people dislike their ideas.

I agree - OP has suggested & asked for other suggestions - can't see a problem with that...
... So here's my additional suggestion now that I've had time to think things over
I've seen many mods that allow Rotten flesh to be smelted or some crafting recipe to produce leather or edible food.
I'd like to suggest something like this...there's no lack of getting rotten flesh (just go out at night or tempt zombies to a group party & wait until daylight ) & apart from eating it (& running risk of poison) it doesn't have many other uses.
My suggestion though is that you get a 'portion of leather' rather than '1 [Smelted] rotten flesh = 1 leather',
Something along the lines of rabbit hides (4 Rabbit hides = 1 leather) perhaps ?
- possibly '2-3 [Smelted] Rotten Flesh = 1 Leather' ??
I would also suggest a crafting (or de-crafting) recipe to be Saddle & shears & and that the shears deteriorate each time you de-craft/use them. The problem I see though is how'd you'll get both the leather & shears back from a crafting table ?
Maps can be crafted with shears and reduce durability already. Milk buckets turn into regular buckets when making cake. It wouldn't be a problem to do this.
I'm fine with the change I mentioned above, and also item number 1. After all, you're killing the cow and it makes sense you'd get a small amount of hide.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

I actually think this could be a good idea. Leather scraps sound like a good use for rotten flesh. I've also found it weird that you can just slap a couple rabbit hides together to make a piece of leather. Maybe instead, one rabbit hide could = one leather scrap, and then four leather scraps could = one leather. This could even give alternate uses for hides and leather scraps.
I support this. I hate having to kill a ton of cows for a powerful Enchantment Table, and villages are quite rare. Fishing takes far too long to even be considered an option.

Yeah, I came here to post basically this. I never have a Minecraft game without some kind of rotten flesh to leather mod.
The only thing I support of this is being able to un-craft saddles.
Honestly, I don't find it hard to get leather to begin with. You can set up massive cow farms and get mad leather with a looting three sword. Increasing the drops only increases the looting amount which makes it WAY too easy to get mad amounts of leather. Not only can you mass breed cows, you can also set up passive mob farms if you are more of the type to just lay back and watch the leather rake up. This would only make those farms even more over powered in terms of cow spawns.
I currently like the amount of leather we get from cows and I've never had true problems with not having leather. Saddles are mainly wasted inventory for me so I don't mind being able to get something back from an already pretty useless item.
My idea is for more mob types to give leather. Sheep, pigs, llamas, wolves, and polar bears should all drop leather when killed. Cows should give more than the others. I'd go for 1-2 from cows (that's a 50% increase from current), and 0-2 or 0-1 from others. Rabbit hide drops should be increased too I think. 0-1 means it takes on average 8 rabbits to get 1 leather. I'd go for 0-2 which would make rabbits average 4 kills per leather. That would be half as much leather as a mob that drops 0-1 leather per kill. Cows will remain special as they provide milk, and they are also the best source of meat. Pig meat is just as good but they should drop less of it. This way which animal(s) you choose to put in your farm are less important, pretty much any choice still gets you that oh so important leather.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).
I'd just add shearing leather armor to get more leather. Low level mobs can drop leather armor which you will throw out anyways, why not use shears on them and get 1 leather?

Actually sounds like a good idea especially since the armor is usually 'damaged'..however some armor is more damaged than others so I'd suggest on getting a random number of leather based on how damaged it is
eg:-
60-99% damaged = 0-1 leather
30-60% damaged = 1-2 leather
0-30% damaged = 2-3 leather
Can't really go much higher cos boots only use 4 leather in the first place

I say we should be able to smelt zombie flesh into leather scraps, and then craft 4 or 9 of them together to get 1 leather.
But of course once you get a few dozen cows, and looting 3... leather is never a worry.
My idea is for more mob types to give leather. Sheep, pigs, llamas, wolves, and polar bears should all drop leather when killed. Cows should give more than the others.
