As I was learning for make maps for Garry's Mod I learned that the only way to make the map have a sky is to cover the entire map with a brush with the Skybox texture.
Something similar should be added to Minecraft.
The Sky block does not have a texture as it hides all blocks behind it.
Similarly to the Barrier block, if you hold it, all Sky blocks will have some sort of icon shown.
I do not have an example as I am a horrible painter.
This would be very helpful to map makers.
EDIT: This block is only obtainable using commands.
I like this, I guess. Don't see any reason not to add, it'd be pretty cool for an artificial sky. But the way you describe it seems more like an X-ray block. also, TeamDomin8r, you get barriers via the command /give @p barrier

This does exist in the Openblocks mod, where it is toggleable by redstone (It has the texture of the sky in whatever dimension you're in, or a normal texture.) It also exists in an inverted form.

Not everybody wants a mod, though. After all, horses were a mod. Pistons were a mod. Et cetera and et cetera.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

yes would be so handy for building in an area with limited space like on a plot server you could make it underground and use these. maybe you could also simulate other dimensions by adding some way to change between overworld, nether or end. support support support supportity port port port!
anybody notice a dr who reference at the end there?

I'm a Whovian squid who likes drawing.
I'm also quite nerdy with an interest in game developing and the concept of a fourth spatial dimension.

As a map-making item, I'd love this. If we can have barriers, why not this? Simple blue sky and clouds.

Sounds cool, even though I would have no use for it. How can you get barrier blocks, anyhow?

Hi
Not a bad idea, it should remain as a creative mode item only. It would definitely help with mapmaking. Support.
And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.
Thank you all for your input. Yes, I forgot to mention that this is only obtainable by commands. I'll edit that in.
/give @p minecraft:barrier

True, but this is something that could be added by Mojang, seeing as many mods have been added in the past.
