I came up with this while travelling away from spawn in a server.
How to acquire:
Take a water bucket and cook it in a furnace. After cooking, you will have an empty bucket in the cooking slot and 2 salt in the output slot.
Uses:
Combining salt with almost any meat, besides the obvious like rotten flesh, will get you salted ___. One salt combines with one meat. Salted meat gives an extra half point of hunger when consumed.
Why?
I needed a travel food to get me out of the server spawn. I had plenty of fuel, but nearly all the animals were cleared out. With salted meat, players can, with a little bit of effort, travel farther on less. Established players would probably never salt meat because the effort to go salt it would just not be worth it if you have even the smallest farm.
Could be interesting. But no unfortunately, this seems pretty pointless i mean how much farther could you go with a 1/2 point of hunger. Also, meat isn't the only thing you need to survive we also have farming which can easily satisfy if you get some bone meal.
It would be better if it had more uses that would justify the amount of time needed to get all the water buckets from a source block to the furnace. Right now the food salting is interesting, but has limited use because of the high cost:use ratio. No support for now.
Partial support. While I do think salt has potential for creating better food, it needs to have higher hunger points/saturation. Or maybe a salted steak for example can have as much saturation as a golden carrot.

Think about it. Say you have a stack of cooked chicken. That's 384 points of hunger total. Now salt them all. 448 points total. Quite a large bonus. If you make it add too much hunger, it would just get ridiculous. I intended for this suggestion to make a "travel food" that only those who absolutely needed to stretch a small amount farther would use.
Point taken. But my other question is, how much salt does it take to make a whole stack of meat salted? Or how much salt do you get out of 1 water bucket?
Salted food is a good idea, but I think to really implement it, you would need to change ALL food, by have it rot so the salted food wouldn't. Good creativity, but maybe not so good with the idea itself.

Ah, non-salted food would not be negative. In fact, with a decent farm you would almost never use salt. Also, good point. I'm thinking that one water bucket would make 2 salt, for now. Each salt will salt one piece of meat.

No Support because it seems like a lot of work to make food give you an extra half bar of hunger back

It seems pointless having a unique item that gives half hunger point. It would better an item that gives more saturation for certain foods.

I like eating Donuts and Dragons

Maybe the salted food gives a temporary boost, like 1-2 seconds of regeneration, but much but can be a heart or two in a fight.
