I mean, come on, honestly. It's not like it would be any more gamebreaking than infinite water is.
We've already got the Nether, which, albeit a pain to access/use, is basically an "infinite" lava source considering it's nigh-limitless lava oceans, so why not cut out the middleman and allow us to create in the Overworld an infinite lava pool the way we do for water?
Building a large obsidian structure requires a LOT of lava. Obsidian is very strong, so it makes sense that collecting a lot of it should be a challenge. If there was infinite lava, it would be too easy.

As I said, how is having inf. lava in the Overworld really that different from (build Nether portal, pop in with bunch of buckets, pop back out with full buckets from giant ocean of lava that is anywhere you look in Nether), aside from removing the delay/tedium of loading screens?
With infinite lava, I could build a 2x2 lava well somewhere safe and make infinite obsidian right there, with minimal risk and only one or two buckets. The way it is now, it requires a significantly greater investment of:
Time: Going back and forth between where the lava is collected, and where it's used
Space: Depending on how/if the player stores lava, it can take up a lot of space
Resources: Enough buckets to fill up most of an inventory, possibly more for short-term or long-term storage. Cobblestone or gravel to fill in areas of lava which has already been taken, to get to unharvested lava
Risk: A higher risk of falling into the lava. A risk of being attacked by mobs, if the area is not secure (or alternatively, the time and resources to secure the area first).
When making lots of obsidian, I've often thought "arg, this would be so much quicker and easier with infinite lava!" Infinite lava would make obsidian farming so much easier, though, that it would be unbalanced.
Also, as a fuel, it can take a lot of time (and risk) to find a blaze spawner, plus a lot of risk to kill the blazes or a lot of time and effort and resources to build a grinder. Blaze rods are an infinite fuel source, but they're much harder to obtain than lava which makes them better balanced than infinite lava.
Charcoal and wood are already infinite, and are even easier to get.
Yes, but effort is required to chop the wood and smelt it into charcoal, and each charcoal only smelts 8 items. This suggestion lets you get lava, which smelts more than a stack, with just a bucket and a right click. This is in no way balanced. No support.

"A pain?" How? Why? Once you got a portal set up, you're golden... If you're lucky, you can even find yourself a good lava source in the Overworld and just mold a portal even before you find diamonds.

Obsidian in general is hard to obtain, as others have said. It is also hard to mine unless you have a really good pickaxe.
Lava, while easier to mess around with, is sort of "uncommon", if you will. What you're asking for is just 2 sources to have infinite lava. While it sounds a bit logical (you provided the water example), it would theoretically ruin some servers like Skyblock.
Even besides what it would "ruin", it would also mean getting to the nether is easier than ever. It means obsidian gen's (believe me people will make it somehow), and it would also make the "pain" (rewarding fun, I say) of getting the lava and making all those trips for nothing.
A lava bucket can in fact only smelt 100 items. However what he means is that you just right click with it, and you have 100 items good to go. Charcoal/wood can be used for smelt, but sometimes even with the best equipment it takes, it's going to take you a while to obtain that much material. And if you say "don't use bonemeal then", you still have to wait or hunt for all those trees. A lava bucket is just "right click" away. And an infinite lava source means never having to move at all anymore (auto furnace + inf lava)
Actually, a stack of lava can only smelt 100 items. A full stack of charcoal can smelt 512 items, and a full stack of wooden planks can smelt 96 items, so a whole stack of wood crafted into planks can smelt 384 items.
I think he meant that a bucket of lava can smelt more than one full stack of Ore.
honestly, i think players should be able to make infinite lava pools. i mean, it's no different from having a mob farm right? those give you infinite resources, and infinite XP. of course, mojang tried to nerf iron and gold farms, but they got major backlash afterwards.

Congratulations, you just proved absolutely nothing! My point still stands: This would allow you to get lots of fuel in literally just a click. Lava is valuable and dangerous, and if you can get it infinitely with no effort, that just breaks the game.
I mean, come on, honestly. It's not like it would be any more gamebreaking than infinite water is. Okay, so placing down an infinite lava source and using it for infinite fuel for the furnace is not game breaking, ok.

No, even if a nether portal is a pain to use, once you have the portal set up, you can just easily access it and collect lava and go back to the overworld and use it.

Infinite-ish. The bigger the farm, the more mobs spawn, and it does take some time to work. Mob farms still reward based on both time and effort, much like harvesting Lava Lakes. Infinite Lava source blocks remove both time and effort, and that's what makes it game breaking.
Actually, I DID prove a point: Lava is not necessary in order to be able to smelt a lot of items. In fact, it is really awkward to use it because it has to be monitored to avoid wasting fuel, so it wouldn't be any more game-breaking than charcoal. If anything, the issue would possibily be that it would be harder to clean up.
But if it's infinite, waste no longer becomes a problem! Who cares if you lose some of that bucket of lava? It would take less than a second to get another! Sure, it's not necessary, but why would you use anything other than lava if getting it is so easy? Charcoal simply becomes a waste of time, because overpowered infinite lava. And that's not even going into the other uses. You could cast yourself an entire obsidian base without going to the Nether, or destroy anything and everything you desire in liquid fire. This is still not balanced, and you're not proving otherwise. You're just making entirely different points to the one I made and hoping they distract me.
That's right - lava is more common than every ore except coal! That's also if you include the 300,000+ iron ore I've mined, and much of the obsidian was exposed lava in caves that I poured water over; either way, the lava that remains is still enough to smelt nearly 2,000 times the iron and gold ore I've mined and 41 times all the ores remaining (including coal, diamond, etc). While this is from a pre-1.7 world 1.7 still has 77% as many caves (mostly more scattered) and the same number of ravines and lava lakes (small pools) so it is still more common than iron in current versions - and much easier to get since it comes in giant "veins" (caves filled with lava below y=11).
And that's just the Overworld; the only thing infinite lava will change is the ease of obtaining it (you can only carry 37 lava buckets in your inventory) - otherwise, it already is infinite for all practical purposes unless you are on a custom map (e.g. Skyblock); the same is true of most other "limited" resources, some of which do deserve to have an easier way to obtain or renew them but lava is not one of them.
We already have infinite water which is a big pain on its own, but adding infinite lava means it would be impossible to reach the diamonds under the lava. I've never tried this before (I never have gotten very good luck looking for iron ore, since I wander in caves looking for anything I can find) since I am worried of falling in and the lack of buckets, but I am considering trying it soon, but if there was infinite lava, then that would be impossible. It is hard enough to get rid of water when I don't want it, but if LAVA was infinite, it literally could mean that if you accidentally added your infinite lava source too close to flammable material you could easily burn down your house (good thing I build my houses out of random mining junk such as polished versions of andesite, granite, and diorite).
NO SUPPORT
Also, lava will spawn in pools randomly (but are rare), or they will spawn in every ravine or cave below level 11.
Uh... No? (You're welcome for detailed and thought out criticism. But seriously. I'm gonna be lazy and just slap on another "For all of the points mentioned above, no thanks.")

Lava buckets work as fuel for furnaces. Easy infinite lava means easy infinite smelting.
Building a large obsidian structure requires a LOT of lava. Obsidian is very strong, so it makes sense that collecting a lot of it should be a challenge. If there was infinite lava, it would be too easy.
Blaze rods are good fuel, too, and there's ways to get infinites of those.

By making this, it would be too OP. If you have a friend with infinite lava, imagine what would happen to your 3 months worth mansion made of wood?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
