I would imagine that a chicken would only need to load 9 chunks at any one time, and would unload them when they are no longer needed.
Yep, exactly. It has no need to see farther, so its not like you need to prepare for that much lag.
OH Just thought of a new use for them

I like the idea of a little companion that can carry a few objects for you. Can the Chicken pick up objects that it might be already carrying? As in, if you hand it a piece of cobble, and then mine more stone, will it pick up the cobble? Support
Update! Pictures of a Homing chicken with a block on its back! Pictures Pictures Pictures!

I was looking back through my posts, trying to find the best one that I wanted to keep talking about and make better, and I saw that I missed a couple comments on this one. So I'll use these as a way to both bump this for further discussion, and answer it!

I don't think so. They carry what they are given, and that's it. But it could be a neat idea... sorta like how the items just combine automatically anyway, so it shouldn't be a huge issue. Hmm. What does everyone else think?
What if you could attach Elytra to the chicken, and it just kind of fluttered away?
Like, flying? That could be one way to do it Perhaps it could fly anyway or something. That would make it much easier to have it traverse some areas.

What if Homing Chickens followed other Homing Chickens that hold Mixed Seeds? And if there was a way to interact with the inventories of Homing Chickens and send them off automatically, then there could be auto two-way chicken transport lines.
Or you could use Minecarts for that, but where's the fun in that?
Anyway, support for chickens and because I don't really see a problem with it.
You were specifically quoting and responding to a post that was deleted, therefore your post was also deleted.

Imagine the amount of chunks the chicken would have to load to get to its destination. This would be massively lagged out.

Silence can only be shattered...
I like this idea. If Mohjang and Microsoft would tweak whatever, this would be pretty cool!
The beautiful things in the world can not be seen by the eye, but have to be felt by the heart.

Uh. Sure! They can't attack anyone, but they can certainly hold items for you.
