How about a good reason to go to the end? You get lots of XP for killing the dragon, and then there is the egg, which is really just a trophy. How about this?
With 4 obsidian, 4 gold blocks and a dragon egg you can craft a Shrine. This Shrine would be a new item and would only work if placed. once placed, it cast an aura of peace on the area say a 10 chunk radius. In this aura of piece, no hostile mob could spawn, only passive or neutral mobs. Intrinsically you could rest easy in your peaceful valley, venturing beyond it's borders to subdue evil in the rest of the world. You could sleep with the lights out, you wouldn't have to worry about your villagers, and for once in survival mode you could be truly safe. Want to extend that aura, slay another dragon, and build another shrine. If broken, the shrine drops only the obsidian and gold.
Anyway, there's already a way to disable hostile mobs. It's called Peaceful Mode. It can be toggled off and on at a player's will. No support.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.

Peace that is toggle wouldn't be any fun, earning it by slaying the dragon would be. I play in survival mode on hard difficulty usually. I think it'd be nice to WIN something, like a small piece of pacified real-estate.
And I thought that there was more than one dragon????
By the time you beat the ender dragon you most likely have full enchanted diamond gear. mobs are not an issue anymore by the time you are at this point, except for maybe the rare enderman. It would actually harm you, since you would be missing out on important crafting materials from killing these mobs, which you can always find yourself running low on. While there are plenty of reasons to visit the end, this is a well balanced suggestion and adding another reason to visit couldn't hurt.

Well, it's not really OP, bt=ut it's unfair for the people that don't have the dragon egg. Only one person would be able to own this.
I thought this was onto something but then that train jumped off the bridge into the river.
There's already ways to prevent hostile mob spawning. Even then, a 10 chunk radius is ludicrous. It would take away the challenge of having hostiles around. Not to mention, there's boat loads of reasons to go to the End in 1.9, if you have been paying any attention whatsoever.
So hostile mobs won't spawn in a 10x16x16x256 area (655,360 blocks) in each direction? This is way overpowered. Something like this is overpowered to begin with, but if you are going to suggest it, the radius shouldn't be this high. Also, this doesn't really fit the definition of a shrine.
I think you need to check your math again. 10x16x16x256 IS 655,360, but that isn't how much is in each direction. It would be 160 blocks in each direction. 16(length of chunk) * (10 chunk lengths distance) is 160. I believe that this suggestion would work, but with some tuning. I would suggest making it be crafted with a dragon head, instead of a dragon egg, as well as 3 gold blocks, 3 obsidian blocks, and 2 redstone blocks. To prevent it from being a simple 'no mobs nearby,' I would have it act as a player in terms of mob spawning, allowing mobs to spawn within the 50 or so blocks of a player they could spawn, all around the perimeter of the shrine protection. The mobs would then be attracted inwards when passively wandering, instead of passively wandering. Additionally, I would have it require a constant redstone signal to stay active, allowing toggling of it when you feel like the monsters, which would be at a net increase due to more spawning area, got too much for you.

You haven't been following the 1.9 news have you?

Someone hasn't been paying attention to 1.9. There's chorus fruit, dungeons, elytra, dragon head, very good loot, easy way to get enderpearls...
Also this would be OP for the one person who owns the dragon egg.
My computer won't run 1.8 let alone 1.9. My apologies, since this has all changed in recent updates.
Torches do the exact same thing. I would much rather make a torch with a stick and coal instead of going to the end.

Torches do the same thing. I wouldn't want to go to the end and getting that just if I could get a torch.

How would this be op lol.

A reason to go to the End? lets see all the reasons.
1.For the rare elytra wings.
2.To get the chorus plants.
3.For adventuring the new End.
4.For obvious reasons to loot chest.
5.For building materials.
Like the critisizers the dragon egg can't be respawnable. overall.

You only care about the command blocks!? I know those are good, but haven't you seen the WINGS? (Elytra)
So basically, I'm stupid.

Nothing for support from me.
Figured it was time for a change.
