As many people who have played in the latest snapshot (15w34a) will know, there is a pretty serious issue when it comes to dealing with large crowds of mobs. Since players are now unable to effectively spam their swords to deal with an oncoming horde, it is easy to be overwhelmed or trapped in a corner. Whilst this does add a new edge to the combat system, it does seem rather cruel.
In response, I propose an addition to shields; butting. Put simply, when blocking with a shield, a player could left-click to knock back the mob in front of them a short distance; perhaps only dealing a single point of damage (if that). This would give players a way out of the crowd, without making combat any easier.
I like the idea of butting with a shield. Although I actually think it should do no damage at all, as it is a defensive tool. And you could basically just do the same thing with a sword to take care of crowds, hitting a bunch of mobs really fast; it would take a while as it would have decreased damage, but coupled with the shield butt it could get up to a decent amount of damage.

I think a better solution would be to rebalance attack strength if necessary. Something like "heavy attacks do more knockback" or "spam-clicking does more damage than it used to, so it's useful against hordes".
But honestly right now you could probably just get on the right side of the horde and then block until they push you where you want to go.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?
I think it should just take half a heart, its defence not attack, it purpose should be knock back.

Seems like it could be pretty useful in combat. Though, maybe it should do only half a heart or no damage at all as it is defensive.

There should be a weapon that can damage all enemies in in a 90 degree angle in front of the user.
I vote for the axe, since it can already get combat enchantments, and somewhat makes sense.

You can already "butt" by spamming punch.
