(I have completely changed this thread including the title and it is very different from what it used to be so update your comments please) I think that sponge should be able to suck up lava as well as water. But it will be a new type of sponge that, like regular sponge, can't be crafted. So you get it from Lava Temples as a drop from Fire Guardians. As you probably guessed Lava Temples are the Nether version of Ocean Monuments and have Nether Guardians as a replacement for regular Guardians and Fire Guardians as a replacement for Elder Guardians. A Fire Guardian will drop 0-2 Nether Bricks (the item not the block) 0-1 Blaze Rods, and a single Nether Sponge. (Nether Guardians drop the same thing minus the Nether Sponge) Lava Temples will be built of Nether Brick and Nether Sponge and have lava inside. It will also contain a treasure of 8 Quartz Blocks. Now I will explain Nether Sponge: As I said before it will able to suck up lava which turns it into Flaming Nether Sponge and to turn it back into regular Nether Sponge you put it in the crafting grid with a bucket of water. When placed Flaming Nether Sponge will look like it's on fire, glow red, drip lava particles, and deal 1/2 heart damage on contact. If you have any ideas of how to make this better please leave them in the comments.

Not a bad idea, but in real life, that would just burn up the sponge (although I guess Minecraft isn't all that realistic). Maybe if the sponge is destroyed after a certain amount of time as a flaming sponge?
It also doesn't make sense to use a furnace to put out a fire... what about just putting a water bucket + flaming sponge in the crafting grid?

Yeah I guess that would be better to do it that way but I never thought of that.

I don't really see how it's OP. If you could explain to me why you think it's OP I could possibly change it to make it less OP.

I have already been told about this but I don't see why it is better than my suggestion. If you could explain this to me I could possibly change stuff to make it better.

I think it's OP because a regular sponge (which has a main purpose of soaking up water..) would soak up LAVA. Which is, obviously flammable, would burn the sponge. (unless it had water, then I don't know what it would do then, water has a slight advantage over lava...).

I guess it could maybe be a different type of sponge but I don't know what that would be. Also instead of it being crafted it would probably come from some kind of Nether ocean temple (like a Lava Temple) that has Fire Guardians that are fire resistant and drop the new type of sponge. Actually that is a really good idea so I will update the suggestion as soon as possible.

I do think this is really unrealistic and OP, since you could turn a nether ocean to a pit (meaning you just got rid of all the lava). Yeah, but it would be great for clearing caves, but too OP to drain a nether ocean.
Partial support

I don't even play Minecraft much anymore yet here I am on the Minecraft forums for some reason...
as stated above, this post is redundant as generator of cubes already suggested his idea for fire sponges, and his way is a little less OP if you ask me

Where do lava temples spawn? What blocks are they built with? How much health do the new mobs have? How much damage do they deal?
No support unless you explain the points above. And I don't think copying te ocean monument to the Nether is a creative way to implement the sponge.
Obviously Lava Temples spawn in Lava Oceans in the Nether. I already said they use the same materials as Nether Fortresses (Nether Brick). Because they are the Nether version of Overworld mobs they will have the same health as them. Also I forgot to mention that Fire Guardians shoot fire balls like ghasts.

Still it's a little op.. There's another Thread almost just like this, though, it covers more.. and a little more reasonable..

Redundant. There is a far more fleshed out version of this idea with a mod attached to it right here:
