Corn is a two block high crop similarly to the two block high flowers, and gives 1-3 corn when harvested. It's found growing in villages, and as a rare drop from zombies. It would also replace wheat as the breeding crop for sheep.
Corn grows at half the speed of wheat, while having the same amount of growth stages (Bonemeal would also only be half as efficient when used on corn). Unlike other plants however, corn is not slowed down by nearby crops, making it more efficient to plant in large bulks. (Adjacent crops slow down each other if you didn't know.)
Corn recovers 3 hunger and 3.6 saturation, and can be cooked into roasted popcorn which recovers 8 hunger and 12.8 saturation. Corn also functions as seeds, just like carrots and potatoes.
Corn can be brewed with an awkward potion to make an invisibility potion. Corrupting night vision potions would now give you blindness potions instead. Blindness potions would have a 15s/45s duration for the normal and extended version respectively.
Now, the most important part of any corn thread!
Putting corn into a firework will turn all the firework particles into popcorn which will last for an extended amount of time, allowing the popcorn to rain down on you. These popcorn particles are purely aesthetic, and disappears shortly afterwards.
All of the current crops are only one block big, and it makes farms look flat and two dimensional. And that's a problem because...?
With the recent additions of two block flowers, it got me thinking that such a crop could help make farms look more vibrant. Actually, quite creative idea if you ask me.
Corn is a 2 block high plant like rose bushes and the other tall flowers, but you have to break the corn plant once it's mature in order to get the harvest just like all other crops.Corn will generate in villager farms as well as being a rare drop from creepers. Why from Creepers though? Just make it available to Villager farms, or as a rare drop from Zombies. Similar as to how they would drop potatoes and carrots.
Why creepers you say? Some would say that creepers have become quite corny nowadays Ha ha ha, No.. That pun was horrible please don't kill me. me. I'll kill you.
Corn would be edible and cookable, having the same stats as a raw and cooked potato respectively.
Additionally, you can combine corn and a poisoned potato together to make potato corns, which is used to make blindness potions.
Now, what would a corn thread be without popcorn? I highly dislike the idea of unoriginal food such as popcorn or sandwiches, avoid this, please It would be a good one. But to the nether with the norms I say!
Placing corn into a firework will cause it to explode popcorn particles everywhere Not a bad idea actually.. Did that catch you off guard?
Responses in bold. The idea of a corn as a new food item isn't far-fetch'd to me, but you played around with it and added some creativity to it, such as having it as a double-block, and using the item to make a fireworks.
Since Minecraft is a three dimensional game, it seems odd to have farming, one of the most valuable sources of food, be as flat as dropped items on fast graphic options. I feel that it's a problem since it removes the creativity aspect of Minecraft by making all farms look and feel identical. Sure, you can organize and plant crops in a pretty pattern, but just looks and feels flat compared to the rest of the game.
I did think of making it a rare drop from zombies, but as you said they already drop potatoes and carrots, and I thought it would be better to have them drop somewhere else. Sorry for the worst pun of 2015, I'll change it to drop from zombies, as I see that it detracts from the topic at hand.
To avoid any misunderstandings, let me try to rephrase it. Sorry for any confusion please don't sue me, I'm poor.
The cooked corn would not be popcorn, but roasted popcorn or something.
Fireworks would be the only place where popcorn is present, and in the form of particles for comedic effect.
Thank you for your feedback, I'll make sure to take it in consideration when making any changes to the thread.
A. Rare drop from creepers - Considering that creepers are, well, creepers, it would be difficult to obtain corn as a rare drop. Spiders could be a possibility, since zombies and skeletons already have rare drops.
B. Popcorn - Like endergirl said, unoriginal food just bugs me, and history usually shows that unoriginal features don't make it.
C. Food stats - We already have a potato that fills , and when baked, fills . And we have the carrot, which fills raw. We need something different. Corn should be a more powerful crop, but it should take longer to grow. What if raw corn filled , but when cooked it filled ? This would make it different, and give it more of a reason to be added.
D. Potato corns - What on earth is a potato corn, anyways? Doesn't sound like a very good way to make blindness potions to me. I'd prefer just to have reversed night vision potions.
A. Rare drop from creepers - Considering that creepers are, well, creepers, it would be difficult to obtain corn as a rare drop. Spiders could be a possibility, since zombies and skeletons already have rare drops. I will definitely take spiders in consideration, however I don't have enough feedback yet, so I will be keeping it to zombies unless more players agree to that. I don't wish to detract from the topic with such a minor detail.
B. Popcorn - Like endergirl said, unoriginal food just bugs me, and history usually shows that unoriginal features don't make it. As mentioned in my reply to Endergirl, it would not be a food item, but rather a particle effect that you could use with firework for the sake of it.

Corn should be a more powerful crop, but it should take longer to grow. What if raw corn filled , but when cooked it filled ? This would make it different, and give it more of a reason to be added. I did not wish to add too many tweak-able aspects such as food values initially, however I will definitely try to figure something out for balancing. I will add it when I believe I have some values that would not cause the discussion to focus purely on them.
D. Potato corns - What on earth is a potato corn, anyways? Doesn't sound like a very good way to make blindness potions to me. I'd prefer just to have reversed night vision potions. I don't even know what a potato corn is, and this is honestly only really a cheap way to give some use to poisoned potatoes. Night vision already reverses into invisibility, so unless another potion is added for the invisibility potion, this is just not possible. I could possibly add another potion to this at a later point for this purpose though. I will definitely figure something out though, your feedback is not ignored.
Thank you for your feedback, I will definitely take it in consideration when making revisions to the thread, but I cannot promise anything as the thread may die out before that happens. Stop ninja'ing me btw.
I think it would be nice if the Corn plants were similar to Sugar Cane, in that you can break them at sections and get various returns. Corn could be a maximum of 3 to 4 sections tall, and each section could give you an ear. This may sound a bit tall, but corn is tall.
I like the idea of raw corn being used as animal feed. One ear of corn could break down in to several kernels similar to how pumpkin becomes pumpkin seeds. And then of course you have the option of shoving the entire ear into the oven to make 'roasted corn'. But what if you could also take the Kernels and use them in a complex recipe similar to Rabbit Stew and create 'corn chowder' which would heal slightly more hearts per bowl?
THOUGHT: Maybe a fully mature Corn crop bottom block gives seeds, and a top block gives the Corn item? And the top block grows all at once, unlike the bottom one.
Wow I LOVE this topic the only thing is that popcorn may need to nerfed (Excuse my spelling if nerfed is even a word) a bit. Other than that this is awesome!

I agree
I suggest you can feed chickens with corn.

This is cool and would make farms more interesting. Support.
