Since you do like strip mining, what do you think of the idea of increasing the amount of veins but make them smaller? What do you think of other ideas?

For those who complain about post-Beta generation, you might want to see this.
There is nothing wrong about strip mining.
But I believe the cave exploring should have interesting things that strip mining does not, and strip mining should have its risks too.
Gain/Effort currently weighs much more in favour of strip mining. It's all a question of rebalancing.

There already benefits and detriments to both forms of mining anyways. Cave mining often requires more effort and has monsters in it, but ores are open to see and so are dungeons/strongholds/mineshafts. Strip mining takes more time and has more random results, but it's rather straightforwards and you don't have to worry about monsters. Perhaps you can manipulate it better if you think about these things and what they mean, rather than mostly trying to make strip mining annoying or dangerous. Because right now you've really thrown it off balance by making strip mining obnoxious with obsidian, harder stone, and poison gas.

Which is why there is a poll. Not all options must be added. It may well only be obsidian as it is the simplest to do and it goes straight with your points being straightforward and no monsters (Of all three I personally prefer poison gas though.)
No worries, I am still sure that you would like something better in cave mining. It may not be in the poll, but what would it be?

Caves are pretty much like they should be IMHO. Not too fond of lava lakes and lava spring source blocks, but they are work-around things and not too much trouble. Obsidian is nice as it is and anything harder would just about drive you nuts without efficiency on your pick.

Well, that is why the obsidian pocket idea is added. No new harder stone. And by the way, nowhere has it been said that the harder stone near bottom would not be harder than obsidian, only harder than stone, whether dynamically or as a new stone. But the obsidian pocket is a nice simple idea that works as well.
Hehe no worries, you can continue to strip mine while caves can be better! In fact how would you feel strip mining could be better? Or have some more risks so it's a bit more lively? Or how could caves be more interesting and less depressing for you? Let us know!
