The World Border was added in 1.8 as a tool for mapmakers. It has no use for singleplayer. However, this idea would give it a practical use in standard survival mode. With this idea, you could create (For all intents and purposes) finite worlds in a legit survival game by specifying world border size in the world creation options. This would help with people who get lost easily, for instance. The world would still generate as normal; the only difference if you select a different map size would be the position and size of the World Border. When you spawn with a finite world option enabled, the world border is centered around your original spawn point. The world border size would be also divided by eight in the Nether to facilitate proper Nether Portal teleportation.
There would be a new button in "More World Options" that specifies world size.
The world size options are as follows:
Infinite: The world border is the same as it is today in vanilla. (Selected by default as the standard Minecraft world size)
Uhh, I think the sizes need to be changed to much, much bigger. 64x64? I build houses bigger than that.
And 1024x1024 might seem big, but it really isn't, especially if you are calling it giant. When I am exploring something I'd call close it is probably at least 3000 blocks away.
