I know this is probably somewhere in the mass of topics on the forums, but I did a quick search and didn't see much talk of it. Powered railways using redstone torches.
In this demonstration: is a minecart. is red dust. is railways. and is a redstone torch.
I don't know about you guys, but I really just dislike standing on a powered-minecart and dropping coal into it, and quickly jumping into the next minecart infront of you. Instead; I think minecraft should have powered rail systems. We wouldn't need anything new, just a quick circuit and it would be all set. like a switch at the side of a railway, and hitting it turns on current and powers the railway instead of having to use up a furnace and a minecart just to power yourself forward. Like so from a top-down view:
Everytime you pass onto the connected piece of rail; you'd get a boost of speed. And it would power in the direction you place the extra piece of red dust. Or (overpowered) it would power the whole rail way.
Or instead of the whole powered railing system, make a connection between two minecarts possible so if you throw coal in a powered minecart, you could already be in your cart and be riding with it so you don't have to worry about timing it just right. Like making a mini train system.
just a way to make the game more efficient in my opinion.

you could have it where a furnace type device would produce "energy" along a rail and if you click it it would reverse so you could have one on either end of your track. and it would push carts on the track in the direction of the flow.
you could have it controled by a switch on the minecart.

I dont like using coal-carts because i have a system where it would mess up the railway.

I really want to build a subway system, but I absolutely HATE the powered minecarts. They're just way too much of a pain to use.
