Ehhhh, I'd rather craft a kitty pooper scooper and just sift though beach sand and find ocelot clumps near roaming ocelots to make "artificial clay" with than use up those materials.
Would the crafter get empty buckets back, or would this consume the buckets?

You're behaving just fine. I like the concept, although not the recipe. If anything I would have it be 1 Dirt, Sand, Gravel, and Water Bucket, and have it give 2 Clay Blocks.
Clay is one of my favorite things to work with and there simply isn't enough of it, to the point I need to travel thousands of blocks to keep my supply up.

Not a big clay user, but I'd like to see this recipe produce 4 clay balls instead. Not entirely sure since I don't work with clay much, but wouldn't 2 clay blocks equal 18 clay balls? A bit much for the amount of common materials required. Or perhaps even only one clay block/9 clay balls.
I do like the proposed revised crafting recipe though. I want my bucket back after crafting, for sure!

Actually, one clay block equals four clay balls, if you check the recipe via NEI. If you have Improving Minecraft, you can even uncraft the block.

It is 4 clay per clay block.

Are buckets consumed?
Why can't you just find natural clay?
WHY DO YOU WANT TO MAKE CLAY OBSELETE!?!

Clay is already rare to find naturally.
I didn't though in the part of making it an special item (Artificial Clay) or the normal Clay.
I don't want to make clay obsolete, only easier for people that don't find any shallow water near.
I'm sorry if I'm being rude or acting bad.

Of for all Nether sake! You got it right, the world's biggest Tinkers Construct smeltery!
So far in Creative Mode only. But with this [recipe]...

I agree with this idea, as in Pocket Edition, I always had to ration my clay use :/
However, I would like the recipe to allow ingredients in any slot.
I thought I read on the TiC thread that the max height was 7.
