Another thing: let's say we let all the layers as they are right now, let's put we need a world from 4096 blocks to hold everything, we should keep the 0-256 normal MC layers and add other 3840 layers BELOW the Y0, because then, let's say this become a mod, if someone create a world without this mod, and then, later put this mod, the 0-256 layers would still be unchanged, if we changed it to layers 0-4096 for example, the world would consider the house of that player is in let's say layer 90, layer 90 is still final labyrinth level...
so what to you think, Y should go from -3840 to 256, right?
Yup. This way the old worlds don't get messed up, just expanded.
It's bad when you are mining between two layers. When the other layer wouldn't be loaded, it would look ugly. When you build a passage that is in forgotten layer, but the floor is in evil layer, the gravity would keep you sending down, but when the evil layer would be loaded, it would pull you back up to the forgotten layer. When is half of the passage in the forgotten layer and the other half is in evil layer, there are two possibilities. When only the evil layer would be loaded, it would provide nice x-ray and you would see all the blocks on the top of evil layer, that you normally wouldn't see. When only the forgotten layer would be loaded, it would do the same as in the perivious example.
The portals could be a good way to bypass it.
OK, so let's say the 2 upper and bottom blocks of each layer is normal bedrock and the portal would transport you to the layer below, create a space for players not get suffocated and put a portal in the top of the layer to come back to the upper layer, simple
EDIT: but we can't forget 2 things:
1) when entering the void layer, there must be a few stone blocks before the fall, or players would always die;
2) there would be a way to make the sunlight pass down to the far void layer, so no bedrock blocks should be at X{-200;-100;0;100;200...} Z {-200;-100;0;100;200...}
EDIT: wouldn't it be easier to make the game load/render the layer the player currently is in AND the closest layer to the player?
A guy by the name of ben_g0 thought it might be cooler to have different "biomes" on each level instead of each level expanding infinitely. I'm not sure this is exactly what he meant, but I do know that it would be cool for each level to have its own biomes. For example, cave villages might pop up every so often on the abandoned level, but wouldn't span the whole thing. Any ideas?
That's indeed what I meant
Maybe you can also decrease the number of layers then, because currently, it would take a really long time to travel all the way to the bottom. It would be fun while exploring, but when you have a mine down there, the 30 min walk you have to do each time quickly becomes annoying.
BTW I also really like the idea of randomly curved layers I heard someone mention above. If you would combine that with special biomes for each layer, then that would really make the underground a lot more varied and a lot more fun to explore. But hey, this is your suggestion, so feel free to only use the parts you want.

Hmmm, so how about "portal blocks" that send you down there instead of having a 30-minute walking?
I guess that would also be a solution. Maybe you can have special materials on each layer and once you've gathered enough of those blocks, you can build a portal to that layer.

no, i had an even better idea:
there's already a portal block that you would need to go to the next layer as they would be separated by bedrock, so you would be able to craft them and then, just going down layer by layer, still better than having a 30-minute walk, right?

The portal would be of the same shape as the nether portal, but would be made from supercooled obsidian instead of obsidian. How does that sound?

AHHHHHHHH, ok, but i think if it was possible to make the game render only the level you are currently in and the nearest level to you, that way, we wouldn't even need portals...
I just thought that it would be an easy transportation. (The portal would take you the surface from wherever you make it)
Another idea is a "level pearl", which would be made from a rabbit's foot and an enderpearl. When thrown, it would take you to the next level up. Up only, because down would be OP.

AH, ok, i thought you would have to make one portal for each layer down/up
so, how about this: a supercooled obsidian portal that whenever you use it, you will go to the surface
how about a new block called overheated obsidian? it's easier to mine than obsidian and can be used as a light source
and another thing: i think players shouldn't be able to pass the far void with enderpearls, it would be way too easy, is there anyway to avoid this?
I think that loading two layers, each 128 blocks thick is better than portal.
I'm just wonder whether servers can display one player twice, like in the overworld and in the Nether the same time. It could be a nice plugin for servers. There would be many dimesion, each dimesion with two connected layers. Each layer would be displayed twice. In the dimension forgotten-evil The server would automatically warp players crossing Y64 to the dimension evil-maze and players crossing Y192 to the dimension void-forgotten.
WHOA! awesome idea!
note: the layers would be like from Y-3840 to Y256, so old worlds wouldn't get messed, the "layers we're familiar with" would be Y >=0 and the new would be the negative Y's
yes, but i think most of the layer would be fragmented bedrock as it's mine-able, i think it should be put between the evil and the final labyrinth layer
Abandoned Caves seem interesting though, it reminded me of Buried from Black Ops 2.
it was also a pun from 3 games in armor games (deep sleep, deeper sleep and the deepest sleep)
warning: those games are a little scary
OK, i have to go for today, CIA tomorrow (yes, it's nto CYA, it's CIA)
To be fair, this idea is terrible. Sorry, but minecraft worlds are only 256 blocks high at the moment, only ~60 of which are taken up by underground. Multiplying the entire world height by almost 10 would be unfeasible, especially in the place where people spend a little amount of their time. It is very unlikely that this many ores and functions will be added ever, let alone in one go, and the lag caused by a world this big would be huge. It just won't happen, sorry.
Exactly. And it's also possible to make it like a Minecraft server plugin, except that it couldn't include the new blocks. However, it's just a detail.
I thought another layer: Bedrock-only layer
This layer would be made of bedrock, fragmented bedrock and bedrock ores. Bedrock ores would be like normal ores, but hard as fragmented bedrock. About 1/7 of the blocks in the bedrock layer would be bedrock ores.
EDIT: This layer would be between evil layer and final maze layer.
We don't need another layer, there are already too many which we don't need and are pretty much useless.

OP, please only add things if you feel you want to add them. There is always going to be a reason for someone to not support, don't go to extensive changes because it was discussed without you, or because someone suggested it, or wants it before they support... It's became rather a huge suggestion, and most of it doesn't go well... Don't let other people take over, it's still your suggestion, it's really bad if people are discussing ideas without the original poster's permit.

Minecraft used to be only 128 blocks tall. Doubling the world height had almost no effect on lagg. Adding over 2 km is indeed a bit extreme, but you could always divide the world in 'slices' of 128 blocks tall and only load the one you're in and the closest other layer. That way, the same amount of the world is loaded than is currently loaded in Minecraft.
I also don't really agree on the only spending a little amount of the time there. How ofthen do you go underground in Minecraft? As long as you aren't building huge structures on the surface, you spend a lot of your time underground, don't you? And if you worry about only going to an underground place for a few resources then never seeing that place again: isn't this also the case with some surface biomes? When I see a mesa biome, I usually just grab a lot of red sand and never visit that biome again. BTW: the surface of Minecraft worlds is already 60 milion km wide. Would it be so bad to also make it a few km deep?
