Looks: The badlands will be similar to the mesa but also very different. The badlands first 3 blocks will be covered in sand, random splotches of red sand, and random splotches of coarse dirt. Underneath those 3 blocks will be 5 blocks of Clay, plain clay that you would find in rivers and oceans.
Landforms: The Bad Lands will also have different land forms then the usual minecraft biome. First off Ravines and trenches will be everywhere, there will also be Hills near the Trenches and Ravines. But there will also be many new Land Forms too so here are a few.
Trenches: I know I already listed that in the landform section but I am going to add more info on it. The Trenches will be 5-10 blocks deep 4-14 blocks wide and 5-30 blocks long. They will have red sand and the random splotches at the side and clay at the bottom. Their rarity in the Badlands will not be very high , for they will be common in the area. I made a example small trench in this snapshot.
Buttes: Buttes (Don't Laugh) are a type of landform that will only spawn in the Bad Lands they will have a Hill-ish bottom and a Mesa-ish top. There is a small butte in the trench picture near the front of the picture. The diameter from a butte can range from 6-40, they will have red sand for the hill part and hardened clay for the top area. Their rarity in the Badlands is not very high, they will be very common. I made another example but this time it is a bigger Butte.
Sinkholes: Sinkholes will be in a circular shape in the ground (But you won't see it) with a diameter of 7-15 blocks. They will usually have stone at the bottom and a "Unearthed Treasure" in other words, an ore. There is a 50/100 chance that it will be coal, 25/100 that it will be iron, a 15/100 chance that it will be lapis/redstone, a 5/100 chance for gold, a 4/100 chance for emerald, and a 1/100 chance for a diamond. They will be slightly rare in the Bad lands, I mean you don't see a sinkhole everyday. Remember sinkholes will only sink if you break one block in the area of the sinkhole. I made an example of a Sink hole which you are going to see in the next few pictures.
So I was in the bad lands one day and I found this sign and started staring at it, I removed one block Then.
Since I removed a block it activated the sink hole and the ground caved in, Luckily I dodged the sinking part
So I removed the sand and uncovered iron! Not bad!
Hoodoo: Another landform with a weird name. Hoodoos are land forms that can occur in the Bad Lands. They are thin and tall spires of rocks that will come out of the ground. Hoodoos will be slightly common, they can range from 5-30 blocks tall. In real life they can reach up to 100+ feet tall. Hoodoos will be made out of hardened clay and red sand (The bottom being a red sand hill and the top being a tall tower). Once again I made another example of a land form and here it is.
Mobs: This is a new section of the Thread which will be about mobs. I am not going to add too many mobs, the mobs will also apply to Mesa and Desert, and some may apply to other biomes too.
Sun Salamander: Most of you are going to look at this model and say "I've seen it before!" so I am going to give credit to where I uploaded the picture from: http://mccreator.wikia.com/wiki/Salamander
Picture:
Health:The Sun Salamander will have 30 hearts
Behavior: Sun Salamanders will be usually be seen at day time as they are an animal not a mob. They will attack only if you are atleast 10 blocks away from them, if you are 10 blocks away they will make a low growling noise, slowly walk towards you, then they would go beserk. Once you hit that one Sun Salamander all of then Sun Salamanders in a 15 block radius will come towards you and fight, making them dangerous. Sun Salamanders will spawn in packs, fight in packs, and stay in packs. Sun Salamanders will also kill Cows, Chickens, Pigs, Bunnies, Etc.
Damage: Sun Salamanders wold do 3.5 hearts without armor on
Habitats: The Badlands, Mesa, and Desert.
Drops: 5-10 leather 5-15 beef (I'm trying not to implement too many new items)
Maybe try to actually finish your post before submitting it, as people may write this off as being too vauge.
I like the idea though, especially the ravines and trenches, could be a good opportunity for some cool builds. Not sure about the splotches of sand is the only thing, may contrast too much? Also the biomes o plenty mod had a biome called the badlands, which might be something to consider. Hope to read it fully when it's finished though.
Sorry I wasn't there, I was making it then I had to go. But thanks

"The Badlands"? It's simply a mesa and desert put together, nothing bad about it except the way it looks and the non-existent purpose.
No support.
Lol the thread isn't even halfway through. There is a ton more of stuff I have to implement in I just don't have the time. Either way the "Non-existent Purpose" can refer to a lot of Biomes. But That doesn't matter, some people can like some biomes and find them useful others don't.

Lol, I'm holding a wild lizard right now...
I met it yesterday and now it's sleeping on my hand. Perhaps the sun salamanders should be a little more... Amicable. They may be cold blooded, but lizards aren't killers, per se.

What other biomes are useless? The way this biome and thread is going, anything you decide to implement will probably be bad to be blunt.

What counts as useless is up to debate. Some people find Sunflower Plains useless because "Who needs that many sunflowers anyways?" Some people find Birch forests useless because they don't like Birch.
So, to a big chunk of people, different biomes are helpful and some are relatively useless.
Oh and by the way, just so you know:
bad·lands badˌlandz
noun
extensive tracts of heavily eroded, uncultivable land with little vegetation.
a barren plateau region of the western US, mainly in southwestern South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska, south of the Black Hills, noted for its harsh terrain.
singular proper noun: Badlands; noun: Badlands; plural noun: the Badlands
Anyways, I think this is a great idea, and sinkholes and salamanders sound like they'd add some danger to the biome. Support.

I have no arguments against this biome so far in the explanation. A suggestion is to make the structures more... realistic in the pictures (obviously), but we can already kinda figure out it's key structures. The structures you said so far is quite similar to real badlands, though more work is slightly recommended (I know it's still WIP).
I see no major problems so far, so why not support?

I mean that what it is at it's core is useless. Sunflower Plains are good for gathering yellow dye fast, Birch Forest are good for gathering birch wood fast. This biome offers nothing new except a mob which is also apparently found in our beautiful Mesas and Deserts too.
@OP Those drops are basically buffed cow drops. If this is implemented like this it'll be farmed like hell, you have my word on it.
This is too much like the mesa biome in appearance. I see no point in adding this. Also, why would there be wet clay underneath a badlands? No support.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.

Other than that, sounds like a really great biome! I really would like to see your example of Sinkholes though...
Lol dude its fine thanks for support!
I am a friend of all Snow Golem kind.
Thanks for support and there will be entrances to caves
Thanks

Badlands aren't actually bad, silly! xD
Badlands are a" biome" found on earth. :3

Though, i would reduce salamander HP, and not have them all aggro in a 30 block radius.
Maybe just have the group they spawned with attack you (in a 30 block radius)
