Elephants are a neutral mob unless provoked (attacked by the player),
Spawning
Elephants spawn only in Savanna biomes.
They will spawn in moderate size herds of 4-6.
Very rare mob, 3% chance to spawn (same as a naturally spawning brown sheep)
Tameability
Tamable, must use Acacia leaves (gives a higher chance to tame each try) or wheat (gives a lower chance to tame each try)
Must use a golden apple to initiate breeding, you cannot speed up growing process of elephant calf unlike horses.
Statistics
Elephants are 4 blocks high (while mounted, the player will sit 5 blocks high) and 4 blocks wide.
Health: 40 hearts or 80 half-hearts. Health regenerates as fast as a horse.
Attack: 10 hearts or 20 half-hearts of damage every 2.5 seconds. Each attack has the power of the enchantment Knockback I.
Speed: 6.2 m/s (22.2 km/h) or about as fast as the average top speed of a boat on water. To put in perspective, a player's sprinting speed is 5.6 m/s (20.2 km/h). Elephants can walk up one block height differences while maintaining the same speed just like horses. They can also walk up two block height differences but are slowed down from doing so.
Abilities
You will have the ability to add a double chest's worth of storage to an elephant. Equip the chests just like you would to a mule or donkey.
"Trample": ability activated when mounted by pressing space bar, causes the elephant to have potion effect Strength I for 10 seconds. Ability takes 3 minute to recharge, similar to the horse jump bar.
A single elephant will have a two rider carrying capacity (1 driver, 1 rider).
Disabilities
Spooked by flaming arrows (arrows shot from a bow with a Flame enchantment). When an elephant reaches its last 10 hearts or 20 half-hearts, the driver will lose control of the animal and will run amok, either away from danger or straight into more danger. Elephants will attack anyone and anything while running amok. If the rider dismounts, there is a very likely chance you will get attacked by your own elephant.
Reach is severely limited while mounted on an elephant, rendering any melee attacks with your sword ineffective.
Very large size makes the elephant unsuitable to many types of terrain.
Items
Elephant Reins (craft-able). Similar to horse saddle in which you need to Elephant Reins to control an elephant. Crafted in a crafting bench with 3 string on top row, and 2 iron ingots in the row below on the left and right sides.
Iron Elephant Armor (non craft-able). Super rare item found in nether strongholds, iron is the only tier of armor (no gold, diamond elephant armor) available.
Drops
8-10 Raw Elephant Meat. 1 Raw Elephant Meat restores 1 hunger point (2 half-hunger points). 1 Cooked Elephant Meat restores 3 hunger points (6 half-hunger points). To put into perspective, steak restores 4 hunger points (8 half-hunger points).
2 Elephant Tusks. 1 Elephant Tusk can be crafted into 9 Ivory Shards. Ivory Shards are a valuable commodity to trade with villagers. 1 Ivory Shard is worth 8 emeralds. 2 Elephant Tusks (the standard drop of elephants) are worth 144 emeralds.
25 experience points (XP). Blazes and Guardians drop 10 XP; Withers drop 50 XP.
Pros
Size - very large size protects you from shorter mobs (while mounted).
Attack - very strong attack, player(s) can also fire arrows from elephant, as with any other mountable mob
Storage - very good carrying capacity
Transportation - you are safe from most other mobs while riding an elephant
Cons
Size - very large size makes elephant unsuitable to many types of terrain.
Speed - not the fastest method of travel
Loss of Control - you can lose control of elephants, potentially endangering yourself and team mates (in multiplayer)
Melee by player - melee attacks by the player will be ineffective while mounted
Elephants cannot jump - best they can do is climb up two block height differences

Not gonna lie, this post does actually have some good details in it. The way this was written, it makes the idea not sound half bad at all; I'll support it.
Great post.
I have a problem with "hunting elephants for ivory" which makes me back off.
But I would love to see the same person post other ideas for some variations in neutral animal mobs.

Sounds amazing but the ivory is a little over priced. I mean like 144 emeralds for killing one elephant, that's a ton of emeralds. but other than that full support
I think this is a pretty great Idea. Nicely detailed aswell. I also agree that we need more neutral animals in MC. I also really like the ability to put a double chest on them. Full-Support. ;]

I'll be honest, I was expecting a generic one sentence post about Elephants, but what I got was a awesome idea that is actually balanced, you gave the elephants as many cons as pros and that helps, but one of my favorite things would be to have two people riding it at a time, this idea is great, full Support!
Amazing. The only thing is though is the amount of meat it drops. Considering if this was from a farm with over 20, you will have food for the rest of your minecraft days. Maybe reduce the meat and the herds a bit. Otherwise, FULL SUPPORT
