So I was messing with rail tracks earlier and I thought of an idea for a new type of rail, a slow rail. So what this does it it does the exact opposite of a powered rail. Now I know you can accomplish this with soul sand but I think it should be a little easier. Here is a picture of the base of what I think it shoudl look like.
From what you've written I like the idea, but I'd need to know more. In particular, as SlenderSoul stated, in what situations would this be needed for?
Ok, so I'm gonna asume you don't know this because you posted this suggestion but, you can already do exactly this by just NOTpowering a powered rail, it slows it instead of speeding it up. So, because it already exists and I don't want it transfered to another rail as it would just take up inventory and crafting materials I Don't Support.

Ok so lets say you are making a roller coaster and they're is redstone 2 blocks underneath the rail so you have no room for the soul sand and other blocks needed.
And the Crafting recipe would be something like this:
A not-powered rail just stops it, like that. There isn't a lot of ways to slow carts down. Not-powered rails isn't one of them.

Get your facts straight. Not powering a powered rail simply stops the cart immediately. The only valid way to slow down a minecart without modifications or exploits is to not use powered rails at all, letting the cart travel on normal rails until it slows to a stop.
To the original topic:
I think that this could be used to precise Redstone machinery because it would act as a timer. I think that this could possibly be unique, and I could actually envision this suggestion being implemented. I think that a possible good name for it could be the "decelerator rail". Support.

Well sorry, but still, stopping is pretty much the same as slowing except it takes less time so I still don't see the point.

I'm all for it. What if you need to slow down on a roller coaster for something to come out? (ex: endermen) Plus if you dont like having a powered rail stop the cart and just want to slow down a stretch so you can get off and on, then this works. I support.
(P.S. I'm new to this forum so how did you get the crafting recipe thing?)

That's exactly the point. It takes more time for the slowing rail (the decelerator rail is what I'll call it) to come to a stop, which could allow for more complex and precise machinery and timers. And the decelerator rail wouldn't have to stop. Before it becomes completely stationary, the player could make a powered rail speed it back up.

Woah woah woah. Who ever said it could be used for timers? It doesn't emit a redstone signal!

Powered rails do this just fine. So does a brick wall, or a slope.
If something like this is really needed, then you're better off changing unpowered rails to deaccelerate less than what they currently do.

Not-powered rails' ability to stop carts is very important, so just changing that to "Not-powered rails could jusr slow down!" Is terribly bad. If that's the reason to not support, it's bad.

Care to expand on that?
Given that unpowered rails [with that implementation] will still stop the carts anyway- just a few more of them needed; equivalent to the number of powered rails needed for that speed. Its a controlled stop rather an instant- if you need instant stop then put a wall there.
My reason not to support is because existing mechanics can already achieve what this would do; adding this would actually take away from the game in that regard.

I don't want to sound mean here, I try to do that AS LITTLE as possible, but I just think it would make things easier. Just like fire charges, they don't really have much of an important aspect, but they just add to the gameplay a bit more.

I totally agree with Samakin_ add more detail, until then partial support.
Ok, so I may have said this before, probably not knowing myself. But what if you are making like a roller coaster and you don't have enough room to put all of the redstone under it to slow it down and you only need like a bit of a hinder but not a complete stop. But thanks for the feedback guys!
Trying not to be too harsh myself - but implementing ideas just to make things easier usually results in diluting the existing game and cutting out certain mechanics.
That being said; speed control could be quite useful- I can't quite see the need for a whole new rail type when unpowered rails would do the trick, and overall be more consistent with the internal design of the world.

Yeah, I don't know a lot about redstone so this idea just popped up when I saw something about rails in a suggestions thread. Thanks!
