I have a feeling this is a bit of an overused idea, but welp!Oh well!
Oh hi there everybody!Today I would like to tell you all about some ideas that I have to make the desert even better then it already is!(Even though its kind of boring other then stuff like desert temples/pyramids.)
Also please keep in minds, that this is one of my FIRST suggestions,so don't be surprised if some(parts)of the ideas are bad,or something along those lines.
But,yeah!Time to get to the ideas that I have had in mind!
Mobs
Rattles Snakes:This mob will only attack when provoked most of the time, but have a 1 in 5 chance of attacking you when you walk with in 4 blocks of one,and when hit/bit by one,you will get poisoned for about 5 or 4 seconds. They drop snake scales, that could be traded for stuff like emeralds. They also drop fangs, that could also be used for trading, both items also take about 10 to 12 of them in order to trade for an emerald.(If you have any more ideas for drops,or at the very least more uses for the drops, please feel free to comment your suggestion(s)down below!)Rattle snakes also have around 5 to 6 health.
Scorpions:Are like rattle snakes, only they always attack you when you walk up to one with in 4 blocks, they also poison you for about 4 to 5 seconds. They drop scorpion tails, which can be eaten, but like spider eyes, when eaten, will poison you, also for about 4 to 5 seconds. They also can be used as another item to make potions of poison.Scorpions also have about 2 to 4 health.
Vultures:Are similar to chickens, but bigger, and spend way more time in the air. Also,if they happen to see any food laying on the ground, they will swoop down and take it.They drop vulture feathers, that can also be used for arrows,as well as book and quills. They also drop raw vulture, which when raw heals 2 hunger points, and when cooked heals 4.Vultures also have about 6 to 8 health.
Sandstone ore
Sandstone ore is an alt version of ore, though some alt sandstone ores like iron can be tricky to find, since most of the time, after you dig through sandstone for a bit,you get to normal stone.Though sometimes in caves,if you got to the cave by mining in a desert, theres a chance of stuff like gold, diamond, redstone and even lapiz sandstone ore to appear in (the)cave(s).
Changes to Sand Temples/Pyramids.
Now,when ever you go inside one, there will be a scorpion spawner in the middle of the inside.
Changes to desert villages
Now,most of the villagers in the desert villages, will be wearing dark and light, purple and green clothing. While all villages, will accept snake scales, and fangs as a trade, desert villages will more commonly accept them as a trade.
Changes to cactus
Cactus are already fine as they are,but now, some of them will actually have parts of cactus sticking out of them.Like these cactus for example!
Concept Art/Models
Gonna start working on those/these soon! But for now,I would suggest using your IMAGINATION!

Snakes and scorpions aren't really meant for vanilla Minecraft. But I see where this is going and it does have potential. And for the cactus idea, it would be hard to program considering how the blocks work now, but I may like it. Partial support.

Thank you mate!I do kind of feel like doing more with the snakes and scorpions,I just feel like if they were added that there could be another use to them, other then there drops being used for alt stuff.(Which is also why I said that anyone can suggest stuff for better drops.Or at the very least, more uses for the drops.)As for the cactus,I can see what you were getting at,and I even thought about that when thinking of the idea.
Honestly I think that my favorite idea that I came up with the most would have to be the vulture, even though that also has alt drops,I think the ideas I came up with it is my favorite,at least out of all the things that I have suggested here.
But thanks for the support, whether its partial or full,or anything like that for that matter of fact!
Also,I'll be working the concept art/models and banner real soon!
In theory making deserts would be a great idea. But in practice it is not. Deserts are meant to be the barren wasteland of Minecraft with little resources available. They are mostly an obstacle while exploring, as they should be. In my opinion something such as a sandstorm that just deals damage and leaves sand blocks in its wake (Leaving sand now renewable), would be more interesting and fitting for the deserts.
Just my two cents.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?

Perhaps instead of whole sand block leave a "layer of sand" (like snow) of varying height (layer of snow can have different height already, just not being used by the game). Can be harvested with shovel to get piles of sand, 9 piles becomes 1 sand block.

How is anything not really meant for vanilla Minecraft? New mobs have been added before, and I don't see how they wouldn't fit in. Frankly, I think VMC (vanilla minecraft) would do well with more mobs (but not too many) to add to the environment and improve the threat of adventuring, because as it stands (at least, in my opinion) it gets incredibly boring incredibly quickly. Also, I don't think coding would be difficult at all. I picture it being no different than how sand sometimes loads atop sand dunes (as well as gravel) without a block beneath it to hold it up, and won't fall until you touch it. It could be the same with cactus. Touch one part of it, the rest collapses (as it already does).
- Support granted, I think it would help liven up the desert biome just enough to make it worth venturing to, because as it stands I'd be 100% content with deserts not even existing. I never use them for anything other than sugarcane hunting.
