Redstone Torches- A redstone torch should not last forever. Instead, it should slowly dim and end up off. When it starts to dim, the signal gets weaker. This can be turned off with /gamerule torchDim true/false.
Levers- A lever should not create its own redstone signal, but instead turn redstone signals on and off. Life is not as simple as pulling a lever, you know.

Naw, I think 1.5 did enough damage to Redstone contraptions.

You know who can tell me something I already know? Me. All the time. I'm really good at telling me stuff I already know. I don't need help in that department. I don't know about others, but I can't imagine I'm alone here.
Your suggestion would make redstone a lot more realistic, but it would also break any redstone contraption made up to now.
But I like the current system a lot more. It's not realistic at all, but it uses very simple and easy to learn logic, and it still allows you to do very advanced stuff with it.
If you added this to make the game more realistic, then you might as well make torches burn out over time as well. That was added in the 2013 April fools Minecraft 2.0 update as a joke.
Not trying to be rude, just trying to give you some perspective.
Not to mention this would break every redstone mechanism known to man...
and cause a lot of lag (each torch would cause a chunk update)...

Did ANY of you read the part about new gamerule (/gamerule torchDim true/false)?
Just because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad suggestion. If the default to dim the torch was set false you wouldn't do a single thing? That too much work you?
I like the idea, especially the levers. A switch is not a power source.
I count 8 other people in this thread who hate this idea and probably more incoming. How is making something so utterly annoying a good suggestion? This limits the creativity of redstoners and would break almost every contraption since you'd have to go replace the torch.
How, if set to off in default does it break a single contraption?
Also, if set to default and you never touch how it is that annoying?
Logic > Opinion
Learn that!
And why should Mojang waste their time on this? What gameplay value could this have? There's absolutely no logic in your argument and you obviously don't use redstone to know anything about the consequences.
I can see many uses for a dimming torch already. Timers for one, nice and compact in a single block.
So you are willing to break almost every redstone circuit for a measly timer that needs to be replaced everytime it goes out. Yeah, great functionality you have there.
As for don't know redstone, I studied maths, physics and electronics in college. I now have a MCAD in C# and my A+ certificate. Want to take the Pepsi challenge?
How do you like my proprietary 80 byte RAM? Still not perfect but I've got the read time from any address to under 2 seconds. It's almost to the point where it is usable practically. Going to programme a whole underground tube network where a cart can be controlled from a central station anywhere on the server.
Wow it'd be a shame if you had to replace every redstone torch every minute it goes out.
Your logic is so flawed that I'm done here and let you embarrass yourself. Other people are already here to refuting your statements and your so called "logic".

Realism does not always make things better.
In this case, it would break just about every single redstone contraption ever made.

Wow I would have to use cheats to get rid of the worst thing to happen to redstone? Making something optional is no excuse for a bad suggestion.
Your game pic îs. Demonic as heck.
on topic: no support this would brake list of contraptions as others have said
Yes. cause I totally spread gold bars on my toast...

Gameplay>Realism. Learn it.

Then maybe we should add a new functionality - Timer Block - instead of taking away the functionality of redstone torches?
