The world generation got progressively better, why go back? Also, you can just play those versions by selecting them in the launcher if you really want that. (The nostalgia is pretty real though)
Well, some people like older terrain generation, and want to go back to those older days. And the older terrain can actually interesting, because it can present a real challenge to find resources and make the game more interesting.
Also, you can't play Indev, or Infdev in the new launcher, and those had really interesting terrain generation options.
What I would like to see is the old school world generation, but without having to switch back versions. Right now (not sure if it's a bug) if you create an Alpha world with the new launcher and then go back to newer Minecraft versions, the alpha world will disappear from your world list.
What Aureum is saying is that he wants an option that allows you to change the world generation when you create a new world, maybe under the tab with "Big Biomes" or "Superflat," which I think is a great idea.
"The world generation got progressively better", okay....
In my opinion, no, it didn't. All they did was add new biomes and change the way everything generated. When I played back in Beta 1.6.6, the terrain was quite awesome. I'm pretty sure now there is select terrain generation for each biome, but it isn't very random. You go to an extreme hills biome and you get the same cliffs. You go to a forest and you get the same landscape as any other. There are a few rare exceptions, but overall the landscape for every biome is the same.
Before everything was changed in the [unknown] update, terrain was not generated like this. There was a nice flow to the terrain because there was no biome-specific terrain generation. If you go back and play Beta there is a HUGE difference.
If I got anything wrong please don't flame me, I'm just stating my opinion.
They really just need to improve the customized world type, make the settings easier to use and add more customization options for structures (for example, people complain about there being too many caves since Beta 1.8 - why not a way to reduce the size/frequency without just turning them off (although that was really due to fixing a bug that caused caves to cut off at chunk borders, not a different algorithm, and the addition of mineshafts and ravines)? Conversely, I could crank up their size/frequency to the way they were before release 1.7).
In fact, there is a thread somewhere with a Beta preset that pretty accurately replicates Beta terrain, if not with Beta biomes (but why would you want less variety in biomes anyway? This leads to another issue - include an option to change the size of climate zones; set them to one biome and you don't get huge stretches of the same few biomes, but still mostly avoid deserts and ice plains next to each other).
Note also that being able to fine-tune your world is much better than a few hard-coded settings because you just might not like any of them, which is just what the customized world type intends to address.
We need this, the time machine is nice, but doesn't appeal to all users. For one, the time machine is too laggy for me, meaning I can't enjoy the versions I like best. If the current version of Minecraft had the option to take/add things in from previous versions at will, such as old bugs, mechanics, textures, sounds and terrain generation, then I'd be addicted to Minecraft for a LONG time. I've been rather bored lately with it, and waiting for 1.8 to come is getting tedious. If there's anything that needs to be added to Minecraft, it needs to be this suggestion.
What it would essentially be is an option under "world generation type" that would generate older terrain types of Minecraft worlds.
It would be from 3.0 all the way to Beta.
And it also have the option to make snow worlds (like the ones added in Alpha) using the current world generation. (1.7.10)

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
