I've been spreading a lot of negativity on other people's suggestions. I think it's time that I give others the chance to do the same to me. Because if you know how to dish it out and take it, you're good to go. Yes, I've also searched all over to check if the idea was done before. It didn't look like it.
What the thread title says. Here's an image of how it's done.
Enter the dye you want in the second slot, and enjoy your new label color. Here's a chart of what the labels will look like for each dye. It will cost the same as renaming the item, but doubly as much if you want to recolor and rename the label.
If you hadn't noticed, I used the word "Goliath" for this. Don't tell anyone though, I don't want people knowing. I was thinking about having coloring mixing going on as well, but as expected, I won't make a chart for every single possible combination of colors in that case.
If you hate it/don't support/whatever, that's fine, just give a reason why.
This would be neat. I'm always up for more color. The cost being equal to the renaming seems steep, though. You're only applying a little hue. What if the cost were 1/2 or 1/4 of the renaming cost?

Each time an item is worked on an anvil, even if only a rename, its prior work penalty is multiplied by 2 and 1 level is added. Thus, if an item has been worked N times the penalty will be 2^N - 1. After six workings, the penalty will be 63 levels, making any further repair or enchantment impossible in survival.
Renaming always costs a single level, in addition to any Prior Work penalty. Renaming will increase the prior work penalty.
Basically, anything that isn't a repair is totally useless and wasteful unless you like grinding for enchantments... I might have supported this suggestion if anvil mechanics had been unchanged (renaming permanently fixes the prior work penalty at 2) but in 1.8 they are useless without using the Unbreakable tag and/or mods to restore the old anvil system.
Support, I'm going to use my overused reason to support suggestions, but...
It'll be good for mapmakers.

My Avatar is a Dalek, therefor your argument is... EXTERMINATED!!!
You know who can tell me something I already know? Me. All the time. I'm really good at telling me stuff I already know. I don't need help in that department. I don't know about others, but I can't imagine I'm alone here.
Some of these colors can't be used just because the color support in minecraft does allow it.
Yeah, that thought kinda swam around in my head as I posted this. Are there RGB limits for text? Aren't there servers out there that use more colors than that?

I'm in favor of being able to use colors for text names. Ought to make it easier to tell apart my villagers (especially now that they're easier to rename), could let me distinguish "gender" for roleplaying purposes, and in general it looks kinda nice.
Don't think you can use nametags on players. Am I mistaken here?
I haven't really gone through the new anvil mechanics enough to understand the reasoning for the changes, but... why the hell would renames make things MORE expensive? It sounds like if you have an item you can rework it six times, but if you rename it you can only rework it five or something. Is Mojang trying to discourage renames rather than encourage them? I would think that when you have the goods to make a neat weapon and actually give it a name, you'd want your item-that's-so-special-it-needs-a-name to be around longer. And I'd hate to be on survival having to choose between naming my awesome sword and having my awesome sword stick around being awesome.
Would we be naming our pets if doing so made them die off faster? I'd be calling all my cats "Hey, you" just to avoid losing them sooner than I had to.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!

I support this. It would make it much easier to make custom tools in an adventure map. Maybe adding something like a pressure plate would add underlining or other formatting?

Finally!
SUPPORT!!
This would be a great feature, I can customize my tools more!
Nice to see you guys again.
Also, I won't say, but I think I know why you used Goliath!
Also, Mojang would most likely pair these up with one of the 16 current color codes on text in the game, you know 0-9, a-f.
They completely changed how anvil operations work in 1.8; now costs are much, much lower, only one level - with a huge catch:

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Mobs actually being varied???

"Wake me, when you need me."
If you supported it once, why not support it again? I rather like the idea.
Support, I can be OCD and colorize my tools in spectrum order.
