Now, before you tell me off for suggesting space travel, I'd like to clarify something. This isn't another "0MG HAAX I WANNA BUILD A PLANE THAT CAN FLY TO TEH MOON" suggestions.
It would pretty much be the complete opposite of the Nether. Instead of being firey and evil, it would be cold, peaceful, and 8x BIGGER than normal Earth. Also, you would be able to jump twice as high as on Earth. Oh, and maybe the travel ratio would be 1 Earth units to 2 Moon units, making it good for collecting resources and stuff, but bad for fast travel.
How would we get there? Not a flying machine, for sure. Since it's outer space, it would make sense if you had to "beam up" to it. There would be naturally occuring (But extremely rare) columns of pink energy in the world, possibly near the bedrock where redstone occurs. It would be 3 blocks high, and pink because pink is a nice contrast to the Nether's purple portals. I'll use cloth to give a visual.
Now, these columns would probably be extremely unstable, shooting deadly radiation in fixed intervals (five seconds or so?). To get the radiaton under control, you would have to slip in two iron "stablizers" on either side of the column. They would be crafted like this.

Once the stablizers are in place, the beam will get a whitish tinge and stop emitting radiation, showing that it's safe. in all, it will look something like this.

Phew, that took awhile. Anyways, You'll step in and your vision will fade to white as you slowly float upwards...
You wake up near a similar portal on a dusty, white landscape. As you stand, you notice that the sky is enormously detailed, with stars, galaxies, and tons of other stuff that you wouldn't be able to see from Earth. Speaking of Earth, what's that rising over the horizon? You start off walking, and notice hundreds of indentations in the bleached soil, 2 blocks wide, 2 blocks long, and one block deep. Some, however, are deeper. They reach down almost too far to see, but you can see just a faint glow of lava at the bottom.
As you keep walking, something doesn't seem right. Dust clouds keep obstructing your view, whipping up a haze that completely disorients you. As you look through the fog, you see something...
Before you can react, a pale being dashes out of the fog, as if it's floating on air. It knocks into you, and you can just make out a pair of red eyes as you get knocked into the air... And right down one of the deep craters. You fall seemingly hundreds of feet, and don't dare to look down, because you know there's lava beneath you.
You land safely on the side of the molten pool, not taking any damage because of the low gravity. What's this? Ores! Veins deeper than you can imagine run across the walls of the chasm. You gather as many as you can carry, and then sigh as you realize it's going to be a heck of a climb back up.
Hours later, you break through the surface to find you're only about a quarter of a mile away from your portal. You dash back as fast as you can and stumble back into your base, dumping your loot into a nearby chest....
But it isn't over...
A month later, you're getting ready to head for another diamond run on the moon when you hear an unearthly explosion from your portal room. You dash in to find ghostly figures pouring through the portal, and realize with horror that the stabilizers are destroyed. You flee for your life, closing doors behind you and activating numerous safety systems, but they just keep coming. You finally reach the outside, thinking that sunlight might keep you safe. However, dusk is arriving soon. As you climb a tree to make your last stand against these unearthly creatures, something makes your heart skip a beat.
The moon is red.
Not only this, but there's something else wrong. In the deathly silence, only one thing breaks the lonliness. Moans. Hundreds of zombies appear suddenly out of the woods, trodding in your direction.
The night is long and difficult. Most of your supplies were in your portal room, which you know by now is overrun with ghosts. All you have is a diamond sword, a bow, and half a stack of arrows. The night seems to drag on forever, as you slay zombie after zombie, losing several hearts in the process.
Finally, the sun comes up. The entire field seems to burst into flames, and all the ghosts suddenly fade out of existence. Your portal goes back the way it was when you found it, and the stabilizers will have to be replaced. All you can do is prepare for the next Red Moon, and hope you'll survive.
