Hi ! so currently the only way to fill a water bottle is by crafting a cauldron and filling it with a water bucket . but there are some more logical and easy to code ways to fill water bottles that don't exist in the game yet . they are ...... ( wait for it ) .... :
Holding a water bottle :
Really simple , when you are holding a water bottle in your hand ( not your hotbar or your inventory ) and it's raining , if you stay in the rain for 15 seconds then it will fill up .
Swimming with a water bottle in your hand :
Why not ? if you're underwater holding an open empty bottle in your hand , does it fill ? Sure it does !
F.A.Q : But this is really unbalanced ! Oh yeah ? and having an infinite source of water just with 2 buckets is balanced ! Minecraft isn't supposed to be realistic !
Who said I want to make minecraft realistic ? I just wanted bottles to be filled easier , and if there was nothing realistic in minecraft , we couldn't get wheat or potatoes , or cows or sheep or even dirt , you know why ? because it also exists in real life !
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
I hope you notice that you can simply right-click with a bottle on a water source and it will get filled. And you can use that infinite times without losing the water source.
Also, your arguments on F.A.Q are pretty much invalid.
No support.

Well then how about the second one ? Say there is no lakes nearby and you need to make potions and it's raining .

Uh. Not sure.
If you look at the bottle texture, you can notice that it's closed (Even when you drink it... ), so i doubt that water could go through that.
I can't think on a situation where this feature could be useful, since even deserts have water. Still no support, sorry. >_<

It's ok , and I know , deserts aren't really that hard to survive , only if they removed desert wells and made rivers rare in deserts ... to make it more hard .

What if the bottles are stacked? I mean, it would suck if i'm walking around and my inventory is suddenly full. Plus water is a bit too resourceful anyways.

Who walks holding a full stack of empty glass bottles anyways ?

Well you will get one from me.
You thought really well about this suggestion it earns a support.
There you go;)
Spends probably 10-20 minutes on a suggestion, and it looks like he's getting support because it took a while. Yet, I can spend 45 minutes to an hour, and that never happens to me. :/
Anyway, I'm gonna have to say no support. Sorry. It just seems pointless.
TBH this really isn't helpful, unless your mouse's right-button is broken. It doesn't take much effort to just press the button. And raining, meh; still not useful. It's not like it would help at all if you're in a desert (no surface water nor rain). Oh welp, support cause why not.
Who walks holding a full stack of empty glass bottles anyways ?
That doesn't answer the question. It's a genuine thought. Someone could have a lot of bottles for many reasons, and suddenly it rains, and they're stuck with their inventory filled with automatically filling bottles.
Also, I want to bring this up: it doesn't rain in deserts, so most of your guy's support is invalid.

No support. It isn't thought out enough.
You realize he said it has to be the current item in your hand, right?

False, you can fill water bottles from any source block.

The rain thing is really pointless.
Also, do you realize that a lot of people use the mouse wheel to select items in their hot bar? So that means, when the player is swimming around, and scrolls past an empty bottle, boom, all of a sudden their inventory is assaulted with water bottles. This is extremely poor UI design. Player actions should never happen unless the user tells them to.
strong>But this is really unbalanced !
Oh yeah ? and having an infinite source of water just with 2 buckets is balanced !
This has absolutely nill to do with balance, just laziness. Also, the "everyone else is doing it so I can too" argument is a lame excuse. I sure hope you don't apply that to your everyday life.

Not only are water bottles extremely easy to fill, you counter point yourself here.
Games are about interaction. You can't seriously believe that 1 bottle every 15 secs is easier or more enjoyable than say 5 bottles every 1 sec(not that filling water bottles is particularly enjoyable). If you want to watch things on a screen, go watch a movie. If you want to engage in said things, play a game. Both are valid forms of entertainment.
No Support.

I'm going to have to go with no support, unfortunately. The idea is practical but kind of useless.
