I have a bunch of suggestions that I would like to put out there, I will make separate threads for each! Hopefully the masses will agree with me on these thoughts and we can get something going!!
The easiest / most impactful request:
I just thought it would be a great idea if the your sprite illuminated while you had the torch or light box in your hand.
This would work very well for traveling through dimly lit areas and would prevent having to use torches up.
the negative behind this is that if you are walking at night with the torch in hand MOB's should be able to spot you from a further distance away... and if you are attacked you would have to switch to your sword and won’t be able to see anything.
I like the idea of having a lit torch while you walk around, but the sword thing does seem complicated. Maybe the sword could be in the other hand? Now that I think of it, I wouldn't like that because it would block off the side view of everythig.

the loss of light would be natural with switching the illuminated item from your hand to the sword.
a torch with a sword removes that... erie feeling of not being able to react fast enough to the MOB when hes right around you.... - think silent hill or Doom with the flashlight, you cant react with the flashlight in hand but it does give you better visability.
1. People would no longer place torches they would carry 1 torch around
2. the issue with swords etc i dont see how that is an issue you just change to your sword when you need it but also you would ned placed torches to see then so yeah i dont think it would make the cut...

notch said that this wasnt possible but someone went ahead and made this a mod anyway proving that even notch is wrong ocasionally
you can find it in the modding andd mapping forum but im not sure if its beta compatible yet.
plus why is this such a bad idea it dosent prevent mobs from spawning and you still have to pull out a sword making it usefull for ppl on peacefull or just in general durring the night

Well I think people would place torches around still. I mean sure the held torch gives you light around you, but if your in a cave system and you go long enough not putting down a torch evey now and then, your gonna get lost.
Someone coded torches to emit light when you hold them... and I really wish Mojang would implement it into the game. The work has already been DONE for them, and it's a very natural development.
And it wouldn't render torches useless, anyway. People would still need to place torches and lanterns, because it's not like mobs aren't going to spring up behind you just because you're holding a torch. It would just be nice to be able to hold a torch when you're climbing that mountain in the dark. If not a torch, lanterns should be able to do it.
Apparently, Notch thought of doing this, but the problem is, that type of dynamic lighting is too complicated, and will be too taxing on your computer. Notch stated this somewhere, I believe he was answering a tweet.
one man can’t do it all, but that’s why we have such an awesome community! we as a whole can make this game something that our children’s children will play...
hopefully if the lighting engine improves (there are mods for that already as well) we can see this happen, it would be a great addition to add realism to the game.

Yeah, if the lighting engine improves, I think this would be an awesome idea to implement into the game.
Moving light was taken out because it crashed the game.
And dont take the sun as excuse for moving light because it isn't technically moving, its decreasing light size. And the sky is animated so it looks like its moving.

This isn't true. notch said it wouldn't work with the current lighting system.
Yeah, he said that way back when he came up with the first version of the lighting system. In the current version there is no such limitation.
Moving light was taken out because it crashed the game.
It was never officially included. It never crashed the game, either. What it did do was cause "snapping" since the lighting is discrete which ended up being ugly, so Notch never officially added it. However, as has been demonstrated by others, lighting need not be actually be discrete or .

In the original lighting system the day-night cycle was implemented in a way that sunset and sunrise required that all visible chunks be updated. It was slow as hell but was still a lot less computationally expensive than lighting a small area around the player. The sun was later given its own lighting "layer" which allowed global lighting changes to require a lot less processing. Treating player light sources as yet another layer (and one that doesn't actually need to be stored in map data) would require comparatively little processing power and wouldn't interfere with existing lighting in the slightest. Additionally, in a multiplayer setting this lighting doesn't even need to be done server side, it can be purely a client-side effect.

Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence.

Good point... In the source I read, it said that it just plainly crashed the game. I believe it was in the word of notch, if not. Some other source I completely forgot about.
Really? I just thought it was a light that decreased in 'light levels' 15 - 14 - 13- 12 - 11 - 9 - ETC.

Yes, it is. The BetterLight mod I linked to simply interpolates between these light levels (and adds some AO) to make the discrete nature of lighting less obvious.
