Perhaps you should be able to make a map that shows a vertical "Slice" of the world from the sky down to bedrock, instead of top down. Looking side-on, if you will.
For instance, if you have caves, it will show you where they are along the Y and Z axis, or along the X and Z axis, but not both. Depends really on which direction you are facing when you open the map.
It is crafted with 8 paper, but with the compass near in the top center of the crafting grid, with the 8 paper filling every available space.
I think this is actually a pretty good idea, but could you put in more detail? How is this thing crafted? Is it only found in dungeon chests? Traded with a villager?
I don't think this would be too useful in showing caves; here is what I am thinking you are talking about:
Now, that's just a single vertical cross-section, while cave systems look like this in horizontal cross-section (not the same as above, which also doesn't have ores, etc because it is at the edge of the world):
As you can see, the first image doesn't tell you much; also, I mentioned ores above; a vertical map like that would show you the locations of ores, basically making it a form of x-ray, something that Mojang has been trying to eliminate.
How exactly would this map look like when looked at?
Currently I'd have to say no support until it's been elaborated upon, 'cause I imagine a "vertical map" isn't as simple as it sounds my friend.
However, the ability to make a map that shows not "what skylight hits" but a deeper cross-section, would be useful.
However, only if you can make the map not be a "true" cross-section but more like, "show the ground of all tunnels and caves between layers Y1 and Y2", using various shares of grey to indicate if the tunnel is higher or lower, with some player control over where Y1 start and Y2 stops.
That would be very cool to map out a multi-level subterranean base.

Like so:

Where is paper and || is compass.
It's icon will be a slightly red map.
I'll update to OP to include that now.
Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
