I actually like this idea, but i should mention, that if i don't eat long enough i sometimes feel a little pain. So what about while the deadly 10 minutes begin, you will start taking some little damage after 8 minutes (2 minutes before death) but you will take just a little damage: say... Ehm... Somewhere around half a heart per 30 seconds. This means you will take 2 hearts of damage, and suddenly die.

that's called stamina. you become weaker from not eating; you don't die for quite a while, but it does become harder to get away from the monsters, harder to mine that diamond, etc etc. it doesn't start to actually hurt you for quite a while, but it definitely does affect you.
also to those who are waiting for my mod to turn into this: it's definitely going to happen, it'll be part of my nethack-minecraft project, but I have other stuff that I have to finish first.

Stupidity on the rise with a 40% chance of shitstorms.
A quick summary of my opinions: I don't like it. Mainly because minecraft is hardly realistic as it is (you punch trees, sand, and dirt, and somehow collect it neatly, dropped buckets of lava and water don't spill, you can hold enough resources to build a tower in an IMAGINARY backpack, etc.) and I don't think fits to well in it.
However:
This should be implemented as a mod and only as such. And, of course, with a on/off option. I guess you will be waiting for mob support to come in.
Death should take place after 4 days. 3 days is an O.K. amount of time, but can pass quickly if you are working in a place where you can't see the sun or if you are very involved in a task.
I think the system should be kept with the Green/yellow/red icon and THEN there is a bar.
Food should heal, and well as restore hunger. Otherwise, going out and collecting sulfur like a MAN (hunting) could become dangerous.
Different foods should definitely restore different amounts of hunger. Remember that when you put 3 wheat together, you get a whole LOAF of bread. Just saying.
Food should restore different levels hunger in this order: Omelet(in theory), Uncooked fish, grilled fish(fish are tiny), Apple, Bread, uncooked pork, mushroom stew, grilled pork, golden apple.
Last note, thirst should be kept out, as there is no way to drink water nor has there been any real talk of it being implemented in the future (as far as I know).
Last thing against hunger mode: SMP. It's buggy enough as it is.
This is a good Idea, but from there, you would have to implement food status. Im sure eating an apple WOULDN'T recover the hungriness you've had for the past 5 days, and thus, "realistic" part would go down into nether, get pwned by 5 ghasts and 3 packs of zombie pigmen and come back up to be sent down again, and again.\

Good system but a human can last a week (140 minutes) with no food so the icons don't match with biology.
But when that time runs up, they die, right?
And before that, they get very weak. Anyway, MC is not a realistic game, and never will be. XD Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers... The Nether... I mean really.
I think that after 1 day you should be green. no big deal, just a growl of your stomach, and the fact that your vision gets slightly blurred, but not on the level of = . Thats yellow, after a week. Your vision blurs more, your pangs of hunger are more common, and THAT is the level of = . Then, you get to orange, after another week. You get slowed, You will think notch added bears, and the blur is = ]" title="-<->" /> . Then, a week later, you are in the red. This is following the rules of 3, (no O3 for 3 min,no shelter for 3 hours, no H2O for 3 days, no food for 3 weeks will kill you) Where you will see Bears due to the blur, hear them, and if you leave off eating for one more day...

EDIT: also, there should be a shelter meter, a oxygen meter(For 3 min),and a thirst meter. nothing big, just that the shelter meter needs you to be near light in the rain, under a roof, if or adds rain.
I do not like the idea of needing food in Minecraft. I don't want Minecraft to turn into another job that I payed for.
That said, if I can turn it off for myself, I don't see why not. If enough people like the idea I won't be the one fighting it. If I can only have my ON/OFF switch! :biggrin.gif:
its a game. making it 30 days without food, you wouldnt even have to worry about food most of the time
also, I plan to make it take 21 days to starve to death, but you get significantly weaker at about 7, slightly weaker (not not a lot) after a day.
