I make this topic mostly for rivers. It seems like an obvious idea; bodies of water like ponds and oceans are great and all, but there's no real difference between any of them except for size. Rivers would make for a great way for travel (and make boats a lot more useful), and they could even be their own biome, with things like mob villages and more plant life along the banks. Even if they didn't have all this fancy trim, a stream of water cutting through the landscape (with obligatory waterfalls and rapids, or course) would be delightful.
And another thought occurred to me; underwater caves. They could be implemented later, with things like fish mobs and sea monsters common. It'd be impossible to illuminate them with torches, and players would have to dig air pockets to breathe and place torches, but they could yield greater amounts of rare ore as a reward. Now, craftable submarines, that's for another suggestion thread.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=109379 <--this guy is my new hero. Put his mobs in an undersea cavern, and the problem of illumination is solved, while still requiring air pockets and keeping it dangerous. Of course, this still should wait till undersea areas get more love, but that doesn't detract from the awesome.

I like it! Rivers really should be in minecraft. I'm surprised they aren't right now.
As for underwater caves, yes. IRL, most caves are underwater. So it seems a little strange that there are none at all in minecraft.
I support!
Ice caves. Labrynths filled with mobs, ice, and vegetation. You could find strange flowers, albino creepers, fish, lots of crap. Too many torches and the entire place melts on you. You get trapped. You get raped by mobs. You die. Dungeons have more mossy cobble here, there are new mushrooms, and if you get too deep, it gets hot. There are stalactites (or stalagmites? I can't tell the difference.) They could melt on you at any second. There is a new plant, and it grows ONLY in these ice caves. It glows, but does not melt ice. It's light value is 12. It is not abundant. Setup:
Periods mean nothing, they're just meant to make a space.
Anywho, I'm making one in the nerdyshow server, and the ice keeps melting. It's difficult already. And underground rivers, too. More fish mobs, and they need a skin too.
Ice caves sound like a pretty cool idea, actually. Hell, break a piece of ice on the floor and go down into an underwater cave; this means the glowing fish mobs underneath the ice could provide a tiny amount of light for exploring, so going easy on the torches wouldn't be too difficult. I'm not sure I like albino creepers, but it would definitely be awesome for a creeper to blow up and put a huge hole in the ice. And frozen over entrances to the caves that lead to the surface! Like ice-windows in the ceiling to let sunlight in.

And why don't we have volcanoes? At it's simplest, it could just be a mountain with a lava lake on top. But to get more complex, I'd imagine it'd have a lot more gravel and sand than dirt, and clay blocks would be a lot more common. Maybe some volcano mobs that only spawn near lava? Most hostile mobs don't spawn near light sources, so I don't imagine zombies and skeletons would be as abundant if the volcano's caves were illuminated by all that lava, especially since catching fire is so easy.
It could be good for getting rare items and harvesting lava, but really dangerous to explore. Maybe even some naturally occurring obsidian?

Maybe I'm a purist, but I'm not sure I like the idea of different kinds of Creepers. I do think there should be volcano-mobs that set their whereabouts on fire, that is a pretty neat idea. Maybe a lava slug that leaves a short trail of fire wherever it crawls... plus, if we had volcanoes, it'd definitely be easier to find Gunpowder, while still making it rare.
It's really easy to think of things like volcanoes and underwater caverns, but the thing about rivers is that they're so simple, most people don't think about them. Seems to me like it'd be a relatively easy thing to program, and it's really easy to picture.

Rivers are really a must. But, I'm not sure whether they would require updated water physics to be good, or would just function as very long bodies of water. I'd hope for the latter, as water physics should be updated anyways. If that happened, rivers would just be crazy awesome. They could help define valleys and canyons, create awesome natural landforms in the form of waterfalls and such, and help aid navigation and irrigation (as they do in real life.)
Underwater caves would be great too. I like the above ground caves, but having big underground rivers and generally submerged caves would be an awesome addition to minecraft.
As for vegetation, I really like SirAwesomelot's recent posts on adding to the vegetation in minecraft. The world does look a bit desolate right now, even when you're in a forest or something.
EDIT: Also, I'd like for biomes to be expanded. If/when that happens, it'd be cool to add "glacier" and "snowy wasteland" biomes, glaciers being huge blocks of snow and ice, and snowy wasteland being snow on top of straight rock. Glaciers would be excellent places for straight ice caves (whoever said they wanted that,) and snowy wastelands would be great for frozen caves, with the snowy feel (light blue tint,) frozen water, and maybe a bit of snow in places.
I don't really mind the current water physics as they are, I picture rivers as simply a strand of water going through the environment. If they flowed in one direction though, that'd actually be kind of awesome. But really, I just want some simple rivers to sail through. Pop in a boat and go through the river for exploring, that'd be grand.

Still caverns, sans fish. You'll still need torches.
And redstone torches don't melt ice. However, they have too low of a light level to be a successful source of light.
Meh, I'm just throwing ideas around. Some may be good, and some may be bad. Here's one I just had that could be either;
Rivers in the Nether...rivers of LAVA. If Zombie Pigmen ever started living in villages, then they've got a river to settle by. A river of death and fear and fire. Like the Styx. Maybe even (I'll be the first to admit that this is a tad farfetched) an iron boat that could float in lava?

These are good ideas, and expanding on the zombie pigman villages (why would they live in villages, they are dead!) that are by lava rivers, maybe normal pigman villages near normal rivers (notch did say he would add NPC villages, didn't he?)

I have been playing since September 6, 2010, I know what I'm talking about
Well, I don't feel right just flat-out bumping this topic, so might I also suggest that clay becomes the main block for riverbeds? It's kind of annoying to find en masse in the current Minecraft world.
