Thank you very much!
A Camera is an essential part of sharing good times. And that’s what online play is about in Minecraft: having fun with your friends, surviving, and taking care of each other (Sometimes in the way of “The Godfather”) But currently, there is no function to allow you to take pictures from Minecraft to show to your friends, other than a Screenshot function from your computer. But even then, you would only be able to show that picture OUTSIDE of the game! How much easier would it be to simply take the picture and pass it around to your friends in-game, where they’d all be-- rather than giving them a link to a webpage on the internet.

An Alternative made by Awesome Holtzy
How it'll work
The camera must be as simple as a real one. Just a nice, clean, idiot proofed "Point and Click" camera. No unnecessary Picture Development phase, no need to hook it up to Redstone Wires, levers, pressure plates, etc. All you do is hold the camera and right click to take a picture! Just the same as any other tool that has a secondary function.
Like many tools in Minecraft, the Camera would not require any sort of film in order to work, but instead have a lifespan. After a set amount, perhaps somewhere between 32 and 64, the camera would break and you would need to replace it with a new one. The reason I figure it would not require film is because it should be a Pick-Up-And-Go thing, just like those Kodak Cameras your parents used to give you when you went to the Zoo! Sure, those had film in them, but there was no point refilling it. It's a disposable camera for you to make memories from. My other reason on giving it a lifespan is because it will limit the ability to spam pictures. I imagine that it can and will be used as a form of Greifing which could pose catastrophic to a server's functionality.
Now, how the camera would register the picture is not unlike the way you would take a screen shot. Using the camera automatically filters out the HUD, as if you held the F1 key in game. The difference here is that the camera would store the picture into the server alike the way Signs hold text IN-GAME, rather than onto a Clipboard to be posted in an outside host. Although I am unaware of this exact process, in theory it would pose suitable and stable, and with minimum stress on the server.
Once saved onto the server, a collectable picture item would drop from the camera with it’s own unique ID Code, which would be displayed as the pictures name. For the sake of argument, the ID code would be a 5 digit number, the first two numbers correlating with the player, and the last two are the number of picture that has been taken by said player. In Example, the Server Owner takes his first picture: The ID would be 01001. And then on a later date, he takes another; 01023. The 23rd picture taken by the first player in the server. With the new roll-over hot tips added in the Beta update, each picture would be labeled as “PICTURE (ID)” This way, players would be able to identify who took what picture, giving them a sense of organization.
Storing and Displaying Pictures
Once a picture is taken and collected, you would have a couple options as to what you can do with it. Firstly, you can craft a Picture Frame (seen below) and place it in for display anywhere in the Minecraft World, or you can place it within a Book, to change it into a Picture Album.
Both are simple processes: Picture Frame:
Like with a Sign, hold a picture frame and right click to place it. Again, alike the sign, a small Menu would pop up, allowing you to drag and drop a picture into a single open slot. A full-scale preview would be shown above it, allowing you to make sure it is the picture you want to display, and then a "Done" button would finalize it. Once you do so, the picture would be scaled down into a smaller Painting-like image, kind of like a Thumbnail. If you right click it again, the menu will NOT include the ability to place/replace the picture in the slot, but will still give you the full scale image. The only way to get your picture back is to destroy the frame, in which would drop both a Frame and the Picture.
Picture Album:**
As of yet, Books and Bookshelves have no use. But it won't stay that way forever! They way I think it will be implemented, right clicking a Bookshelf will give you a menu similar to Chests (albeit with less space) and have Books in it, ready to be written in. If you take one, you can right click again to open a menu that allows you to write in it, and possibly a few different, basic text options (Bold, Italic, Underline, etc) as well as your inventory at the bottom. If you drag and drop a picture into the book, the picture will appear on one half of the page allowing you to place 2 pictures per page. If you do choose to place a picture in a book, it will become an Album. In the way I see books, once finalized you will be unable to change the text within it. The same will not go for Albums. You will be allowed to interchange the pictures in it, should you choose to.
** Because books are not yet available in Minecraft, this entire section is subject to change.
Okay, due to "popular"demand, I'm cutting my losses and adding in a Craftable Tripod stand for you to place a Camera on. Since there is no other way to place a camera on a surface, due to the Right click function being used to take pictures, the only way to achieve this is to craft them together.
First, Craft a Stand:
[] [] []
[] []
(This is temporary until I get a render, which is being made! )
Once you have yourself a Stand, you simply take that, and cram it in a workbench with a camera on top...
[] []

** = Camera =Stand
AND VIOLA! you have a Camera-Tripod.
How It'll work
The Stand/Tripod will have a couple auxiliary uses beside being used to place a camera upon...
Placing a Camera-Tripod is like placing stairs in SMP (as of current). It'll face you, and in order to turn it, it has to be broken and replaced. So make sure to face it the right way! Anyways. Once crafted onto a stand, The camera will work a bit differently. For starters, you'll be able to hook Redstone Dust up to it and make a remote/delayed time picture, as by popular demand; And an obvious use: if you place a pressure plate and hook redstone from the camera to it, you can create a Security camera. In order to keep your pictures safe, the camera will no longer drop your pictures. Instead, you must go to it, and right click it. That will instead make all the pictures taken to date drop to the ground for you to collect and view.
I got the idea for the camera when I was considering all of the original and creative ideas others have suggested in this forum. So many of them I wished could be implemented, and I thought to myself, "Boy. I wish I could think of something that people would love just like those!" So over the next couple days, I ran through the forums, looking for some inspiration... but nothing came. All the bases seemed to be covered and little was excluded... So I took a look around my room. A radio? A Lamp? A clock? All suggested before. But then I noticed my camera sitting in the corner of my desk! "No one has thought of that one yet, right?" I said. And I was right. So I spent another couple days working it over in my head before I posted it up. Even then, It seems that I missed out on a lot. And that's when I have to thank you here in the forum:

I like it, but perhaps you should include some redstone? It seems to me that it would make more sense because redstone is "electrical", or at least seems to be.
Also, it is relatively time period accurate. Cameras have been around for quite a long time, since the 1800's, which is pretty accurate considering that we have powered minecarts and "electricity".
I like the idea, but the resolution might be a little low. Also, the server would have to store every single picture that everyone has taken. I'm not sure, but mass picture taking could be bad.

Older cameras worked by capturing light on a sensitive film. There honestly wouldn't be any electrical anything in this sort of camera, save for maybe the flash. It seems like it'd just be a pain.
And plus. It seems like EVERYONE suggests something that requires Redstone to work. I just don't see the need in it :\

Well the server already has to keep track of all the blocks generated from Chunks and all the others you place and mine. I'm sure that it'd be no more of a hassle to the server than simply wandering off into the wilderness, making more and more chunks generate land~

l completely agree with not using redstone. i mean you must also remeber that the record player isn't powered by redstone but indeed diamond. But on the other hand redstone isn't that hard to require, so it would be nice to include more items that require redstone.
Coding problem: Where are these pictures stored? Your concept is sound but the execution is weak.
Possibly a subfolder that contains kz.png and pics.png. Of course, you would only be limited to how much pictures can fit where. It also makes it somewhat easy to remove and add pictures you want. If not - just leave it up to Notch. His Mensa-encoded brain should come up with a good storage idea in two milliseconds flat. :smile.gif:
i would like it if minecraft had a monitor for placeable cameras, but that is getting a bit to high tech.
but even so, a monitor that is split in four(four cameras=full monitor screen) and you place them all around your house. then you always know when creepers are gonna ambush you.

You could have a camera, or you could hold F1 and Press F2 which accomplishes the same thing :ohmy.gif:
Yes, but all that does is hide your HUD. This is taking a picture IN-GAME that becomes a placeable item. Not a screenshot you share on a website online.

Well I'm honestly not familiar with coding. As far as I can figure, the pictures would be stored Client-side in a folder in the Minecraft folder on your computer. The server would be able to read these BMP files and place them on respective pictures, the same way Portrait/Painting textures are read.
You are genius, this would be great for espionage. Imagine scouting an an enemy base, taking tons of pictures then coming back and posting them on a wall dedicated for that kind of thing, bringing your team to victory with your epic scout skills.

lol thanks.
Just be careful with that! Don't want to get caught and lose all the pictures!!
To prevent picture spamming, cameras should only have 30 pics per cam. The pictures should be non-stackable and you could custom-name them. Also, to prevent picture spamming, cameras should require 10 paper and 2 redstone dust to create a picture (as ammo, like bows use up arrows) . Redstone is TOO plentiful for bedrock miners, and paper is easy to mass-produce, so not a HUGE cost...
