Couple of tweaks:
1. Fog - the fog ajuster is for people with less powerful computers, fog could still be in affect, but wouldn't affect low view distance people.
2. Mob spawning weather - should be very rare or non existant, it will be very annoying to have 2 in 5 days ruined by a rainstorm spawning mobs, or have it as an on/off feature
3. Shorter seasons, like 5 hoarser, would mean you might actually see a years worth (who ha Spent 90 hours in one world yet?)
4. Drought should not damage you, or anywhere near as much, maybe 2 hearts in a day
3. Shorter seasons, like 5 hoarser, would mean you might actually see a years worth (who ha Spent 90 hours in one world yet?)
I'm going to take a leap and guess 'hoarser' means hours. Obviously long-term seasons are meant for 24/7 multiplayer servers, where time passes when you aren't playing. I think this idea is absolutely brilliant, ('cept for some disasters that make no sense) and I would very much like if notch implemented it.
As for shorter seasons for SP, that makes more sense.

Well, what disasters seem to make no sense to you?
This. This is the best idea I ever heard of. Everything is clearly explained, so Notch don't have to think, just code :biggrin.gif:
Seriosly, i love it. I especially like the meteor idea. Imagine, you got lost during the night, you wander around, and finally spotted your huge castle. You start to walk in its direction, and suddenly *WOOOOOSHBOOOOM!"! Half of your castle is ruined, forest caugh fire. You have nowhere to go. I know that some would not appreciate a meteor destroying their house, but I WOULD LOVE IT. It would add some spice to the game, so you don't stay boringly(did I spelled it right?) safe.
yeah, can you imagine just working on something, there's a loud explosion and the mountain behind you is gone? And if you don't want that to happen, simply turn disasters off.
Sounds great. I think it would be cool to just have a small base down by the ocean and just have a tsunami come and hit. What about during droughts fire travels even faster?

Or to have a base build into the side of a mountain and watch a 'crash test' village get obliterated by a tsunami
The weather is nice, but remember, anything that destroys blocks is going to be very controversial. I personally, dislike the weather for these reasons. And you need to replace ALL dirt when a solar flare happens to keep your land from looking like crap? Remember, one in one thousand chance, is still a chance for it to happen.
One could say there should be an option to toggle disasters. I believe the disasters should be tweaked (especially the block destructing ones), not made an option.

Ok, i gonna hug a creeper.... < don't let them die... click here please^^
I'm liking this idea alot. The weather and the disasters will bring a new element into the game. I'm especially interested in the disaster aspect here. That seems like something that would force players to pay attention and prepare things that would otherwise go unchecked.
Now with that said, I'm not keen on the idea of a disaster happening once every few days. Looking at the percents in the first post, that makes me think something damaging would happen a little too often. I don't think that would go over to well. So, having a guaranteed period of time, like 5 days, in between disasters before going back to the random roulette of when and what would give the much needed breather.
Also, disaster levels. Something like a level one thunderstorm would be nothing more then a show when properly sheltered. Where a level five thunder storm could actually cause major damage, or potentially destroying your home.
Damage should only occur when the shelter is made from weak materials, like dirt or wood, with low level disasters. Anything above level three however, buildings would either need to be reinforced with better materials, or built with the good stuff right off.
Well, those my thoughts on this. Now to hope I'm not wasting time.

I keep misspelling control as controll. Does mean I'm becoming a troll?
YES. I really like the thunderstorms levelling. It would give you a nice reason for not building your shelter from dirt. My first shelter is made from dirt. I never changed it, because why i would change it? I lit up my lawn, so there are no Creepers that would blow it up. Dirt is cheap. I get a lot of it in my mines. It can't be used for crafting. It can't be used for anything besides making scaffoldings, making your lawn pretty etc. With this, dirt would be also weak. So it doesn't matter that it is everywhere, it would be dangerous to make your house from it.
And i'd also suggest, that higher levels of storms would break glass, but you could make Reinforced glass, made maybe from steel and glass? The reinforced glass would be as though as smoothstone(no more creepers blowin' up my glasshouse).
I also thought of Meteors. Maybe it would contain diamond, obsidian, or both(as suggested before). I personally think, that there would be two types of Meteors: Normal, and Radioactive. There would be a 1/4 chance of Normal. Normal contains diamonds and obsidian, but Radioactive is way more interesting. It would have somekind of mob spawner, that would spawn mutants. They would be way stronger than normal mobs, because of the powerful things inside. It could be some Radioactive powder(alchemics and stuff), which could be used to change spawnpoint, maybe even an alien artifact. Artifacts would be used to make teleporters, or other nasty stuff of that kind.
OMG that's my second wall of text in this ten minutes. I was never that excited about any idea in my life :tongue.gif:
Well, I'm glad you like my thoughts on this, but thunderstorms won't the only disaster(I'm using that word alot) to level. There are also hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc. Any disaster thought of or used would be subject to the level system.
Also, one thing I forgot to talk about are the chances for the levels of disasters. I'm thinking level ones should something 20-25% of happening, and level two or three would be the most common, with 40% likelihood for each, level 4 with 10-15%, and level 5 coming in at a 5-10% percent.

I'd like to take a moment to point out that A) Solar Flares are actually sort of common-ish, and :cool.gif: That ain't what a solar flare is, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare
Anyhow, other than that I would say that this is a pretty good diea, apart from the season length, namely because I'd only see them in multiplayer, because I can't help continually creating new worlds >.<

Earthquakes at sea should trigger tsunamis in a circular pattern around them (like real life!).
