Situation: I have tools which are near to breaking point. Tools like swords I do not want to use until the breaking point, because, i'd like you know, DIE. So I have a collection of unusable swords.
Suggestion: Is it possible to code a way to smelt tools, having it use coal to process and then either having it produce one or more of it's components or perhaps only having a chance of producing a/some component(s).
This fits into existing processes (smelting) and provides a way to deal with overstock in a realisitic manor. Otherwise it's time i installed that lava incinerator!
What if Notch implemented a search bar! Then, you could search for things that have already been though of, and you wouldn't waste a thread or people's time.

yeah.. Good job. Now at risk of being censured here is my reply.
If you had only followed your own suggestion you would have realized that 10 minutes of searching brought up 2 posts which were made not in suggestion forum but else where and also the google site had the suggestion to which i placed my vote instead of reposting, however if it is not available in the suggestions forum, i thought it might be a good idea to place it there. Increase it's visibility and all that.
Now if you'd like, please respond with the posts you searched which make my post redundant. I'd think that would be a better way to respond than the nya nya nya method used. Possibly more people would enjoy doing the best they can to make this awesome game continue to grow.
Ah my mistake, i searched from the index page than directly from the Submissions forum page. Sorry for being all angsty. Not like this idea is like new light in anycase. I just think it would be a good one and could be easy to implement. Low Hanging fruit and all that.
Here is one of the entries that I found. I guess i will go and support that thread:
you could also check out my take on the idea which includes not only deconstruction of items, but also repairing them too. It doesn't use smelting, because not all items are iron or gold, and even the ones that are were put together on the workbench, so they should be able to be repaired, and/or taken apart on the workbench too.
I was going to post a thread about it, but I found this one. :smile.gif:
It really seems very silly to me that i end up throwing away large chunks of pure iron every time my armor gets banged up.
Considering we can extract metal from ore, it would only makes sense if you could turn metal based items back into metal.
This should of course be done by means of the forge, since you are conceptually melting the item down.
Now, this might cause game balance problems by making iron too abundant, so the reclamation should not be 100% efficient.
The number of ingots you get back might be proportional to the item's remaining durability. So some 50% damaged iron boots could give you back two ingots.
Or it could be set up as a flat rate ratio of the number of ingots required to craft it. Like say 30% rounded down.
(So for example re-forging a pick produces 1 ingot, shovel = 0, leggings = 2)

I've implemented both in games and Repair is much harder to implement than recycle.
And as my post brought out, recycling could should be easy to implement as it leverages work/processes already in place.

Apparently no one actually reads this thread before replying.
