The title of the topic explains everything!!! Of course redstone and glass is needed to craft a lightbulb. Much like this!

Yes it would give off twice the light then an ordinary torch and it would be an alternative to lanterns I mean some people like to build modern houses right? Then atleast include a lightbulb!
You can place it in a ceiling. You can place it in a wall. Wouldn't make much sense if it was placed in a floor, maybe to show some cons! Such as being able to break easily just like regular glass that is able to break within half a second when you tried to break regular glass, also you cannot retrieve any of the items within crafted except the redstone.
This idea is simple! Not to complex, not to complicated it's just glass and the addition of redstone, I'm surprised noone has mentioned this yet. Of course it is not an early achievement since you have to go look for redstone and put sand in a glass so come on, lightbulb should be implemented as it is everlasting unless you break it...
So yes I showed you the pros and the cons, it shouldn't matter much.

I don't really like this, because lanterns actually fit into minecraft, while this... doesn't. What part of early 19th century tech screams "lightbulbs stronger than lanterns" to you?
With the addition of the lantern, Torches will flicker out and must be relit with the Flint and Steel. The lantern will serve as a permanent source of light. When the update occurs, ALL torches placed on the map, in the inventory, and in Storage Chests prior to the update will be converted to lanterns. To do this, the lanterns will use the (former) block ID of torches along with a re-skin.
The Lightstone introduced in the Halloween Update is a potential item requirement to craft lanterns, as it has the greatest luminance as a raw material. This would also make lanterns relatively inaccessible and a risky item to get, as has been hinted at by Notch. A second potential item that might be required to create lanterns is Netherstone.
I just don't really like the idea of going into Hell to get lightstone and netherstone to craft a lantern, a lightbulb just seems like an easier alternative for a permanent light source, so torches are going to need to be relit with flint and steel.
EDIT: Actually lanterns are no longer going to be a planned crafting material XD, http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Lantern Atlhough I'm confused if lanterns are going to be or not...
So basically you want an alternative to lanterns that uses two common* materials and doesn't require a workbench to make? You know what sounds like that? Torches.
This sounds more like a cry that lanterns will be too hard to make than an actual, rational and balanced suggestion. I suggest you actually go into the Nether on easy (putting all your valuables in a chest first, just in case) with just a bow and stack of arrows and go taunt the ghasts. I think you'll find that there's a fair distance where it's both very easy to dodge the fireballs and very possible to ping the ghasts with arrows.
Also, vietownage, what part of Minecraft's existing set of tools, materials, etc. has ever led you to believe that Notch ever intended for it to be based on modern times?
*Yes, I consider redstone a common item, in the sense that you'll pick up plenty of it once you get iron tools and start going for diamond.
Or maybe wire it with redstone to a lever? =D, it would create both feelings of a stone age or something and what others would like... But I don't want to be ridiculed by my knowledge thank you...
So based on the things in minecraft would this be reasonable? :sad.gif:
EDIT: If we have magical redstone why can't we have magical lighting >.>, redstone is just like a strip of a cord on your floor that connects to a port...
I think that having a lantern as the only permanent source is a silly idea because it's impermanent as well. If we're going to have REDSTONE in this game and CIRCUITS (and we do), then there is NO reason we can't have LIGHTBULBS.
I personally think the look of a lantern is silly.
Also, -lanterns- don't get snuffed out underwater? No sense to me...
Exactly :ohmy.gif:, some newer players have no idea how all these fancy circuits work on like, how to make 2 levers on each side of a door work properly...
For the lightbulb just add a lever with a circuit and connect it to the lightbulb and make some lightsource... though circuits can't be placed on walls yet can they?
When are you guys gonna learn? Redstone isn't an electrical source, and it isn't magical. It's an input --> output system. You pull a lever (Input), your door opens (Output).
In case TehSoulEater didn't make it clear, I'd like to raise another point. Redstone torches don't make that much light. In face, they don't even make enough light to stop monster generation. Why, then, would redstone be used for the most powerful light source available? I mean, I know that jack-o-lanterns make more light than torches (which is weird, but whatever), but more than doubling the "power" of a light source by just adding some glass seems completely unbalanced AND nonsensical to me.

-- doesn't have to be lightbulbs (because of setting), but an equivalent object.
