more simply, I think of the aether, overworld and nether like this:
aether - peaceful and maybe neutral
overworld - peaceful, neutral and aggressive
nether - neutral and aggressive
also, i was thinking of maybe a jumping mob like a frog or rabbit, they would drop things on death but they would be hard to catch (but low ass health), they drops could be useful for either food or special equips, idk
I just put 2 and 2 together and realized that a weeping angel/boo type mob would probably fit in well the whole "looks pretty but can still kill you" -thing In case you don't know, there are several topics on the mob in question, just search. They're basically mobs that turn into statues when you look at them, but move really quickly and attack you when you look away. You can't even look away for a second. not an instant. you can't even blink. Hey, maybe that could be its name. Blinck, or something... At least it could fill the role of "thing with wings"
I have a feeling that this was probably brought up as an idea already, so feel free to slap me with bacon.

Would the following be an accurate description of an average person entering the Aether for the first time?
You enter the Aether, and find a place of pure beauty. You walk around admiring the landscape and the mobs. A mob pushes you off a cliff/you are pulled into the water by a Swet/you fall into a mimicstone hole/etc and die.
That's about right, but the point here is that nothing actually attacks you, but merely moves you someplace else. If you were FROM the Aether (and thus able to fly) none of the mobs would be able to kill you at all, but only annoy you. (In the case of the Swet, being able to fly might not save you, but if you were a swet, you wouldn't drown ny more than it would) All of the dangers comes from the fact that you are in a realm that you are in no way adapted to survive in, not because anything is specifically trying to hurt you.
Just because you can easily die in the Aether doesn't mean EVERYTHING in it should be something that will result in you dying either. Flying pigs are an excellent way to fill in that gap and just simply be a mob that won't actively try to do anything to you, but still might kill you just the same as any regular pig inadvertently bumping into you in the Overworld and pushing you off a cliff.

It's about as good a description as you'll easily get. It doesn't really address what seems to be the real issue though; people are having problems wrapping their head around the idea that it makes any difference whether something just beats you to death or if it pushes you someplace that results in your death.
also, i was thinking of maybe a jumping mob like a frog or rabbit, they would drop things on death but they would be hard to catch (but low ass health), they drops could be useful for either food or special equips, idk
I like the concept, the rabbit sounds like a more likely candidate for being in the Aether, but there needs to be some way in which the rabbit is special to actually belong in the Aether, and not just something new for the overworld.

[Weeping angel mob in the Aether]
I have a feeling that this was probably brought up as an idea already, so feel free to slap me with bacon.
I coudn't possibly slap you with bacon on the premise that the idea of including weeping angel/boo type creature in the Aether has been used before, since I'm fairly certain it hasn't, but what I will slap you with bacon for is suggesting a mob that directly attacks you.
Just to make my stance on the subject official, Mobs in the Aether should NOT directly damage you. Their goal should not be your death or to hurt you, but simply to get you to go away or to keep you restrained. Imagine the Zephyrs and Swets; If a Zephyr blew at another Zephyr, the other Zephyr would just be blown away, but otherwise unharmed. If the Swet caught another Swet and jumped underwater, the captured Swet would be just as fine as the one that captured it.
Even my take on the idea for the Sentries in the Aether is that their beam would destroy any block you placed, but would only knock you back and mess with your vision if it hit you. It's not trying to kill you, just getting you to stop messing with things in the area.
So if you go by the scale AJ wrote up, then all of these basically fit as Neutral, rather than hostile Mobs, and there should still be some friendly mobs here and there, like Flying Pigs and the Aerwhale.

I just read about Songstone and Floatsand, and I have a suggestion.
Maybe there should be a block that plays music when WALKED on (or punched), because that opens up certain possibilities (giant piano, anyone?)
And, in my opinion, Floatsand should be almost exactly like normal sand, except it would fall up.
Why are you making suggestions that blocks, that have already proposed, have covered in a way that is less limiting? Floatsand will float up if it is struck from the bottom, but it will also float to the side if struck from the opposite side, and down if struck from above. Why would you then propose a block that will only do one of these things?
Same for the Songstone. It's called songstone because different windspeeds and lengths would produce different pitches, and the player could harvest them specifically for creating a pipe organ operated by buttons on the floor. (and also blowing things around)

technically its only called float sand, it doesnt have many properties of real sand
sure it does. You harvest it with shovels. That's all the properties that sand has other than falling, which this would do if it wasn't floating.
you play a tune in the right order and you unlock a door ><
While cool, it's too much trouble when you can just break the block the door is on to get around it, and as Sabata pointed out you might as well just have the buttons act as the door openers directly and it becomes a regular combination lock.
Honestly, that type of thing sounds great if you're absolutely supporting the specific concept that Nether and Aether really are Hell and Heaven of minecraft, but I think it's better to follow that theme, but still leave the actual realm itself open to interpretation as just simply a different realm that has no religious context. So no taint.
This takes the most pointless addition to Minecraft, the Nether, refines it to a point of utter, total and irretrievable pointlessness that only God himself would be able to fix.
And if he's truly not around like a suspect, we're all screwed.
Honestly. This doesn't enhance minecraft in any way, it's like a pointless expansion that gives you a new map to play with. And by 'like' I of course mean 'completely identical'. I'd much rather Notch was spending the immense amount of time this would take, coding slightly more useful and less pointless & gimicky things.
tl;dr: Pointless.

Fair enough. But If you're going to the effort of posting here, and you're not trolling, then you obviously feel your opinion has a certain amount of validity. So how about clarifying your stance? It's one thing to say that "this stuff is useless/pointless" but if so, then what WOULD qualify as having a point and being useful?

I'm pretty sure that the pipe organ lock would be awesome to make/solve if you were making a dungeon for an Adventure Map. I know that the mode doesn't exist just yet, but I'm waiting with baited breath for it to show up, and any time someone suggests something that would make more interesting puzzles for me to design or solve, I must smile and hope that Notch sits up and takes notice.
Bobthemanofkittens: How can a man who so appreciates Azu-Nyan be so against the nether and the aether? The Nether has several points of interest. It provides a nonminecart method of fast travel, it gave us two more interesting mobs, a lightsource of greater power than torches, and two curious block types which can both be used in Adventure mode to create some novel traps/puzzles if one wants to use them as such.
I still don't see what would be good about Flying Pigs. They wouldn't fit in the aesthetic style of the Aether and would look ridiculous. As you may have guessed, what I am against is the look of it. If it were to be a large pig-sized bird or a whole new minecraft specific creature, I would be fine with it. I might even feel better if it wasn't just the pink pig we have now with wings, but actually looked more like it would live in the Aether.
how bout ANGEL PIGS the opposite of pigmen they fly around and if you kill one you get holy pork. you would also have the ability to put saddles on them and fly around throught the aether till the angel pig goes under something and suffocates you.
Idea. Try getting some of the AMAZING modders in the other forum. They have working new mobs that are schweet. It'll be a long tedious process but gosh darn it will be worth it.

Besides, why would you need "holy pork"? Just have it drop normal pork and feathers.
And just call them flying pigs.
And what do you mean, "opposite of pigmen"? They attack you until you attack them?
aether - peaceful and maybe neutral
overworld - peaceful, neutral and aggressive
nether - neutral and aggressive

also, I do like the idea of musical blocks, I would like them more if you can red stone them to become levers or keys, example:
you play a tune in the right order and you unlock a door ><
A "tune in the right order" when you have to either punch or stand on a block to get a tune is no different than using a Lever or Pressure plate.
still, levers and pressure plates would do the same jobs
