hahah, what about a whale that is on fire WHILE underwater? :tongue.gif: No I am so not serious about that. That was meant as a ironically over the top suggestion that sounds awesome but would be utterly ridiculous to even consider implementing.
Lava whales in seas of lava? Even I find the ridiculous.. DO IT!

YUSSS
I love him! I think he might need to be wider than just 2 blocks, but I like all the ideas being thrown around about the Aerwhale bladder.
On the Ether, I like the wind of death idea. That would be pretty clever.
Did you like my Manta ray suggestion that I sent you?
I would hope that this would, in true hot airbaloon form, be pretty slow as not to make boats obsolete.
Same speed or slower than walking, but the ability to fly across the map without depending on the terrian would make up for it.
Maybe the bluepint should involve string, a boa, and the bladder?
I love the model, but I'm not sold on the bladder thing.
I don't want more dimensions, honestly. I don't even care much for the Nether. Originally when Notch announced Hell I thought he meant it would be like a special biome that would occur near bedrock.
note: I really think any pure sky based creatures would only be feasible if/when the height limit is increased. Right now the skies are too small for anything like this or any other sky creature I'm likely to suggest.
New Mob Idea:Aerwhale
Environment: The sky! AI: Non-Hostile Drop: Aerwhale bladder Misc: So this is actually kind of a dual-suggestion. First off, this majestic creature is about two meters across and probably something like ten meters long. And yes, it is a flying whale. It flies peacefully throughout Minecraftia without bothering you or anything.
So, what's the point of these beautiful creatures? Ah! I'm glad you asked. You see, the Aerwhales (I pronounce it Ar-Wall kind of a nod to Narwhal which is pronounced with that same inflection) have a bladder deep within their bodies that allows them to stay afloat despite being entirely un-flight-worthy. An enterprising adventurer with the gall could attempt to wait on a high mountain until one of the creatures happened by, surprise it with a hail of arrows, bringing it low enough to mount a full attack on, and finally bring the creature down. Then harvest the (dropped) Aerwhale bladder!
So why should anyone hunt such grand creature? Ah, well you see the bladder is mystical and can be used in the creation of small personal zeppelins. In this world of low technology, this could be the only means of flight.
I'm personally a fan of the depth this would create. You could have awesome personal zeppelins, but any player with a heart would be confronted with the emotional challenge of taking down this creature.
I'm sure people are gunna dislike this idea, but please let me know how I can improve it. Thanks!
Hazard, you've done it again. I thought my phoenix idea was good, but this, well this is entirely too epic for words
I am slightly confused at how high this thing would make stuff float?
Would it all float at a particular level?
Float according to weight?
Weight - Height
0 - 64
1 - 63
2 - 62
etc.
Something else?
The second option wouldn't be bad, especially if you had 2, resulting in twice the lift power
If it uses my airship design, then it would require fuel for maintaining level flight, and then another set of fuel for handling ascent and descent. The way the weight would affect things is that trying to lift a heavy load would burn through fuel faster and also make the balloons more likely to catch on fire and break midair, letting you plummet to the ground.
well, yes, sorry for not getting into that part and confusing the subject. In order to lift more weight SAFELY, you need more hot air envelopes, but if you're over the weight limit of your hot air envelopes, then the fuel burns faster trying to make the air in the envelope hotter to provide extra lift, but this results in a higher chance of the hot air envelope catching on fire and being destroyed, which will generally cause ll other hot air envelopes to be supporting more weight and be even more prone to failure.
I suggested that cloth and water make it harder for them to breathe so that they have to land, but that neither one would suffocate them, so being completely submerged in water shouldn't suffocate them either. Plus they should be able to swim too, and not drown.

Ah, I see! You were suggesting hot air baloons :smile.gif: That makes a little more sense now.
IRL zeppelins or airships operate by lifting a fixed-frame envelope filled with gas nacelles, height is regulated by altering the amount of ballast and gas in the nacelles, its a nice and simple dynamic thats easy enough to understand any control.
If the lifting moment of the envelope is determined by how hot the lifting element is, how do you regulate the temperature? Fuel burns at a steady rate in minecraft.
It would be an automatic effect whenever the hot air envelopes were overburdened. That way the player can get into trouble if they aren't paying attention, but also have a way of realizing that they're overburdened when the fuel is getting burned through too fast.
You simply take fuel out of the burners or put more into it as is required; fuel in both slots = lift, just one side = level flight, just the other = safe decent, neither = dangerous decent. As for how to know when your balloon gets too hot, that's simply a matter of checking how fast your fuel is burning, if it's burning faster than normal, then it's making the air in the balloon too hot and it could go up in smoke any second. I feel this danger is an important aspect to the flight, in order to balance out the large number of limitations being bypassed over all other forms of travel.
Which ultimately would (at least hopefully)make the Aerwhale better to try to saddle up for a ride than to kill for its bladder, thought the bladder would offer benefits like always providing a safe decent and having a much higher weight limit per bladder, which would make it less likely to catch on fire, etc.
Once again, I am awed by your mob suggestion. It reminds me of the floating hydrogen-breathing whales from the Leviathan series. And once again, all I have to offer is praise and not more suggestions.
I was about to facepalm over your excessively exuberant cheerleading, and the silliness of the request, but cute whale noises (whale songs) could actually be incredibly peaceful and soothing. I could imagine someone saddling onto this thing, and just flying along in order to watch the scenery go by below and to listen to the songs.

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?
Also, would they be able to breathe in water should they be brought down into that level? As in would it be possible for them to drown?
