note: I really think any pure sky based creatures would only be feasible if/when the height limit is increased. Right now the skies are too small for anything like this or any other sky creature I'm likely to suggest.
New Mob Idea:Aerwhale
Environment: The sky! AI: Non-Hostile Drop: Aerwhale bladder Misc: So this is actually kind of a dual-suggestion. First off, this majestic creature is about two meters across and probably something like ten meters long. And yes, it is a flying whale. It flies peacefully throughout Minecraftia without bothering you or anything.
So, what's the point of these beautiful creatures? Ah! I'm glad you asked. You see, the Aerwhales (I pronounce it Ar-Wall kind of a nod to Narwhal which is pronounced with that same inflection) have a bladder deep within their bodies that allows them to stay afloat despite being entirely un-flight-worthy. An enterprising adventurer with the gall could attempt to wait on a high mountain until one of the creatures happened by, surprise it with a hail of arrows, bringing it low enough to mount a full attack on, and finally bring the creature down. Then harvest the (dropped) Aerwhale bladder!
So why should anyone hunt such grand creature? Ah, well you see the bladder is mystical and can be used in the creation of small personal zeppelins. In this world of low technology, this could be the only means of flight.
I'm personally a fan of the depth this would create. You could have awesome personal zeppelins, but any player with a heart would be confronted with the emotional challenge of taking down this creature.
I'm sure people are gunna dislike this idea, but please let me know how I can improve it. Thanks!
I feel like this came straight out of Legend of Zelda. I've seen another person do a whale design, and I just didn't like it, but I honestly love this one; it's so uber-simplified that it's downright ingenious.
I also notice that you're looking at the possibility of Air travel support.
At first I was a little bothered by that overshadowing the more standard material airship designs, but then I realized that the only truly effective way to take one of these down would be by using an airship built with other materials to match up to him. (so I don't think you should be able to take this thing down with just arrows. If you shoot him, he wont drop down lower for more easier shots, he should just try to fly away)
This would be a way to upgrade an airship that the player has already built by replacing one of their Hot Air Balloons with this thing's bladder. Perhaps it could be designed to never run out of fuel for controlled descents, so even if you run out of fuel, you wont plummet immediately.
I also think you should be able to just straight-out ride this guy if you manage to jump on his back and use a saddle on him.
@GreyAcumen - Yeah that would be a cool way to handle it. Make it so the Aerwhale bladder doesn't use fuel. That could be really cool. I like the idea of riding him, as long as it's like the pig where it just kinda goes where it wants.
@qwertyz - A Floating Island realm would be fantastic! A counter to the nether. The Aerwhale would fit in perfectly.
EDIT: @GreyAcumen - I was totally thinking of your idea when I made this guy

Er, no, it should still use fuel for standard chugging around, it should only act as a safety catch so that your airship wont have as high risk of crashing if you do run out of fuel.
Also, I feel like he should have a single block indent in the top of his head that is filled with water. Perhaps taking the water out with a bucket will force him to land, so that you can "park" him when riding with the saddle method. Putting the water back in lets him fly again, and putting lava in injures him. Milk heals him?
Hrmm... rereading the way you have it set up in your suggestion, I'd agree. Perhaps you'd only need one fuel in the upper slot to ascend and one fuel in the lower slot to maintain altitude. No fuel would be a controlled descent. Or, the fuel could be consumed at a slower rate.

That is hilarious, and a good idea. I think the only thing I would change is instead of there being a block of water, you can just cover the blow hole with a block and he'll descend. If you leave it on too long he'll start to suffocate. That'd let you get off.

dropping a stack of feathers into that block will cause him to sneeze, and the feathers will be tossed into the air in different directions.
Using a cloth or water to cover his blowhole wont suffocate him, but merely make him land. Other blocks like dirt will eventually cause him to suffocate if he's been injured already, but if he hasn't been injured, he'll blast the block out of his blowhole and fly away.

The way my airships are designed, the furnace has two burn slots. One side, when filled allows for a controlled descent when it is the only slot with fuel, the other side provides level flight when it is the only slot with fuel, if both slots have fuel, it allows the airship to ascend. Both slots empty = plummet.
the ArWall bladder would work the same way, but if both slots were empty, it would still act as if the "descend" slot still had fuel.
I feel that would be a little under-powered considering the death of the Aerwhale. I'd be willing to accept an increased durability in addition to your proposition. What do you think?
EDIT: That was the best graphic I could come up with for him sneezing. I was being a goof.

Floating islam realm could just be the direct opposite of the nether, above the built limit zone and it can be like heaven (of course notch will edit name for religious reasons).
There might even be darkstone, something that makes an area really dark, dark enough to spawn monsters.
Quick bricks, and fire absorbers :biggrin.gif:

Oh, absolutely, the only reason I didn't suggest that was because I'm still determining how the normal Hot air Envelopes are affected by weights and what the chances of them catching on fire are (which would be greatly increased by running the airship while overweighted) but yes, ArWall Bladders should have a higher weight limit and be less likely to catch on fire.
EDIT: That was the best graphic I could come up with for him sneezing. I was being a goof.
oh! I get it now. lol. I thought you actually meant for him to catch on fire, I'm like "oh snap, he isn't allergic to feathers is he?"

sorry, I get competitive :3
Do a search for "Ether" it was proposed as the opposite of the Nether, and I had recommended that the gateway to it be built the same way as the gateway to the Nether, but using Lightstone blocks instead of obsidian.

I reallly hate you at the moment, anyway, my darkstone and quick bricks >:ohmy.gif:
Anymore factual trolling me and I tell notch . . . cause I has his phone number from the website and alls >>
Heaven has already been talked about.
The conclusion was that heaven would be too friendly and boring. Harsh, but if there was a safe world its a safe ben everyone would use it as a home and stay there.
... though come to think of it...
if it was only accessable though the nether....
and not all essental resources were there...
... Though would have to travel though hell in order to get them...]
hmmmmmmmmmmmm
The floating islands world seems the most likely world that would come next. If any.
The asthetics are not important,
The Ether wouldn't be quite so friendly if it only consisted of floating islands, lots of tenuously hanging sand that can drop in a huge cascade whenever struck(even once) and doesn't have anything between you and the void.

Sorry man, I'm just more focused on trying to get these ideas gathered together so they can get some proper traction than i am in supporting any individual person.
