Today my friends comes the solution to all of your worries. but beware, the cost is not cheap.
but first, I suggest the humble box, part one of the three-part mega-plan.
BOX
---------------------------------------------------
the box is a 3x3 grid craftable item that functions much like a but only has 1 slot of storage.
"But, that is not a good thing to have! why would we want such a useless thing?" you may ask, well I will tell you of the secret use of the box.
The box will open up when recieving input, such as with redstone or an average lever or button. depending on the item inside, different things will happen.
Water bucket: the box opens up, allowing water to flow in the direction of the "face" of the box, good for waterways, traps, showers, mechanics, all sorts of things!
Food ( or any other misc. item): one of the items in the box (assuming you have a stack or something) will pop out of the box, allowing for pickup. good for dispensers.
Lava: sets it on fire, killing everything (not reccomended)
lantern: emits light when opened.
TNT: Blows up as normal
Craft:
[]
-----------------------------------------------------------
"But I want Lava!" or "I also want other things!" or "Blah blah," you say? well look no further.
The next evolution to the might box gives it a harder outer shell, allowing it to be much more durable.
...and unlock some hidden potential!
---------------------------------------------------------
THE METAL BOX
= box. ( it practically is anyway.)
What can metal box do what others cant?
1. The imput must be delivered to the back, oposite to the face of the metal box to operate.
2. TNT/gunpowder: Blasts forward, can be used for simple cannons this way. Only 1 TNT can be loaded at a time, but gunpowder is limitless, although it only delivers a small charge in front of it.
3. lava bucket: works like water now!
4. Reeds: pushes a bamboo stick foreward, expands on reed. the spring-loaded thrust doesnt do damage, but it sends things flying as well as a small hit recoil (like to activate TNT or harvest sheep.)
5. Lightstone: a strong light goes foreward, like a beacon. this light will reflect on gold/steel/diamond blocks to make another stream, but of a different colour.
6. Plus water/dispenser from wooden box.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sounds good enough to make you wet yourself, you say? well prepare to revert to diapers, because here comes step three of the mega-plan.
The potential... UNLEASHED!
Crafting metal boxes for fun and profit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a few extra crafting mixes that will deliver very powerful artifacts from the creation of boxes:
1. the turret.
Place your [>>-i>] in this bad boy and see it shoot when prompted by a redstone trigger in the back!
=redstone
= bow
= iron box
Breaking this gives you an iron box and whatever arrows are inside. so make sure you place these carefully.
there is also a slight reload time between shots if activated with somehting like a lever or prolonged pressure plate.
2.searchlight
Acts like the light of a normal iron box does with lightstone, but this points up and can turn side to side.
= lightstone
= metal box
Only gives a metal box and a pinch or lightstone dust whn broken, so do be careful.
3. fridge:
allows you to keep stacks ( yes stacks) of food that will pop out when activated. any imput will do, so dont worry about redstone as much about this one
= snow ( or ice if notch makes it.)
- metal box
again, only a metal box if reclaimed. beware.
4.smasher (re-forger?)
Can be used to smash things or repair broken items. looks like a forgein interface
= actually furnaces htis time
= this is the metal box.
TBH I didnt think this one through that much, just a concept.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So that is the power of boxes. I know its a bit much but I think it can work
suggestions/complaints/ trolling?

Fascinating concept, but perhaps too much complexity is added by this new modular component system?
Feels cool, but would add a whole new layer of depth to crafting, changing its very foundations. Fascinating.
Well, I put as much as humanly possible for uses of the box, so that every possible concept can be concidered, so if EVERYHTING isnt put in, no big loss. the major part I wanted to put in was the control of fluids. but I think wiht a little innovation, something as simple as a box can evolve into something much better.
i would so make an Indiana Jones stile hallway trap with this. the walls filled with turrets, and the floor coated with pressure plates to set them off.

My mind is a scary place.

Well, if everything is covered in semen, once you turn the blacklight on, it'll look like daytime 24/7.
Because of copious amounts of rooster sperm.
Well then... this is much better than my crappy floodgate suggestion.
Will the fluid buckets be used up? or would they simply stop putting out fluid when the box lost power, but continue when power was restored?

All monsters will fall to the grand might of the power of the box!
+1
