Probably not necessary for a game mechanics, but something to add a little more variety to the buildings. Not every building should have a flat or makeshift looking staggered roof on the top.
So how would you make shingles or tiles for sloped and pointed roofs?

And you'd get 3 shingles which are placed in a manner similar to stairs.
The cobblestone would give you a slate roof. But you could also have some alternates as well. Iron could give a sheet-metal roof, bricks could give clay tile roof, wheat a thatch roof, etc.
Other features of the placed roof pieces are no-spawning, and a tendency for things and mobs to always slide down the slope when on them. Perhaps some materials could be more slippery than others. So they might have some usable game mechanic features as slides and ramps instead of just for looks.
And in case you don't have two separate / and \ meeting at the middle of where you want to build your roof because it's only 1 block across...
A center peak piece*:

*(Unless you've got a good way of checking for adjacency of similar upward sloping tiles on both sides and automatically making a center peak when a regular shingle is placed, in which case a separate special piece would be unnecessary. And if more cleverly designed, they might even "auto-magically" do corners for pyramid shapes...)
This really is a good idea, usually people try to make huge complex ideas that would never work, but this is small, simple, and nice. It certainly would make houses look better.
There's a mod very much like this, Slope mod.
Adds sloped versions of most blocks. Has a nice angled appeal without needing roofing tiles.
It's a temporary solution, unless you don't want to download mods.
I think this is a great idea. The laying down mechanics could be like railroad tracks except on the edge so you could have overhang. I can just imaging the traps people could make with a block like this. I was wondering how one would have slopes going east and north for example, meet, any ideas?

i suggest glass rooves and wooden rooves
Please put rooftiles in the minecraft game. My name is Leonard and I am 6 years old.
@OP: What advantage would this have over stairs...? If it's purely aesthetic, just use stairs, and hopefully more stair types will be implemented.
And I want thatched roofing made of wheat :biggrin.gif:
