The stuff that you get there should be worth the danger of mining together enough lightstone to do it, because I'll be damned if there's gonna be some kind of easy to reach 'heaven' world. That's just stupid. The point is to add to the flow of the minecraft universe in exploration. You mine out your first mine, get some diamond, and maybe build a cool fort. Then, you mine out some obsidian and go to hell. This leads to you fending off dangerous monsters while collecting what goodies you can get from hell, and makes for a cool adventure. This leads to under sea exploration (Oceancraft. Read that shiet.) and Ether exploration. Ether could be like the minecraft "congrats, you got an endgame" but even when you reach heaven, it doesn't have to end. There's a vast possibility for the Nether, the Ether, and the Ocean, not to mention the good bit of fleshed out-ness the regular overworld has. Minecraft has become infinite possibility, which is an impressive feat of gaming, I must say.
Anyway, on topic:
The upside to making an ether portal would be the vast amount of interesting stuff that you can get there or do there. Another attraction could be that stone types like marble grow naturally in the ether, and potentially be a location for randomly generated legend of zelda style temples, Iunno.
:/ (oh wells, when Notch makes something to do with mechanisms I will hit them with a weather generator suggestion)
I was debating how to respond to your ideas. I like the darkstone concept, but I like Firehazard's concept of day being either's "night" that produces the dangerous mobs, and such, while night is the time when things are safer. And so a darkstone that produces enemies doesn't mesh up with that.

How's this for incentive: In the Ether, if you build straight up, you can reach the moon. Low gravity so you can jump 3 - 4 blocks high, and you find out that the moon is actually a giant enemy mob spawner, which is why enemies spawn on the earth at night. Here you can collect moon rocks and craft them into material that allows you to craft your own spawners for all of the mobs that exist in the Nether, Overworld, Ocean, and Ether. But you will also be able to run into and be hounded by every single enemy Mob that exists in the game all at once. Also both water and fire evaporate instantly, so the only way back is to gather enough material to build your tower back the way you came.
darkstone is to condradict light stone and on the mortal dimension - which is the normal earth in minecraftia - you can use it for mob farming and wards
I am swimming in ideas, I cant post more than one in any given thread, its annoying :s

Just give it time, use it to refine your ideas. Trust me on this. I made a HUGE post with every idea I had when I first joined, and it got nowhere. Quite frankly, I'm glad it didn't. I've since come up with far more useful suggestions that fit into minecraft much better, and by posting them one at a time, they're able to be discussed better and have gotten more support.
hmm, well if somebody could lead me towards a possible tutorial to graphic making (like the ones fire makes) I could really express my ideas :biggrin.gif:
however, until then I will accept my fate and just help and suggest ideas and whatnot in low grade threads :/
but yes on topic, ether portal ftw, and stuff >3> wooooooooo
the dam thing better have "caves" made from white stone, so it looks like pillars and heaven templey stuff OwO
I think you're suggestions are fine, I just think you need to work on articulating them a bit better. You kinda quick-fire them. Take a moment to sit back and really consider the idea and present it with a bit more... eloquence? And don't take criticism so personally. Without it we would never get anywhere. By criticizing your ideas constructively, people are helping you to chisel your idea down to a more refined and awesome idea.
Also, the ratio of Ether to overworld should be 1:16 or 1:32 instead of the Nether's 1:8.
I actually think it should be 8:1 as opposed to the Nether's 1:8.

d'oh. I was looking more at game tiers than i was at the logic behind the place. you're absolutely correct.

EDIT: first off, sorry grey for trolling (? [not sure of terms]) and secondly, I changed name to goliath :>
No need to apologize, and i don't think that you've done anything that amounts to trolling. I know I can come across overbearing at times, so I'm not about to be offended when someone tells me to blow off. The only things that really offend me are hypocrisy and deliberate propagation of ignorance, so if you were able to take in and benefit from anything I've said, then that's far more fulfilling to me.
Maybe Twilight would be better? Unless you're particularly trying to avoid referencing that particularly horrid piece of shouldn't-even-be-considered-literature. In which case i would recommend Twylight.
I think I thew up in my mouth a little bit. "Twylight" pushed me over the edge :smile.gif:
Anyone know if there is a name for the period of day in the Arctic where the sun just skirts the horizon? I'll have to look that up because that could be a good alternative to Twilight.
Why dont you call it Eclipse? in a certain sense its still light out :ohmy.gif: and the sun can have a kinda big black dot in the center.
Twilight . . . too many bad memories O.O I almost watched the full movie in an IST course once, that girl in front of me with her laptop . . . bad times o.x
Perhaps refer to it as "Aurora"? It could even be set so that once you get up into Ether, instead sunrise sunset effects, you have an arora borealis effect gong on.
Oh, solstice is when the sun is out longer in the day, and the extended summers in winter are called . . . I cant find the name o.x HOWEVER, there are auroras at night in Antarctica so idk

equinox is the closest thing there is to the opposite of a solstice. I hate to say it, but I think Twilight is actually teh most fitting term for the "night" of Ether.

HOLY CRAP, you're right ><
I forgot there was more than one video o.x
I dont pay attention to these things
Actually I wasn't referring to teh other twilight movie, I was referring to what Firehazurd had been suggesting, that referred to teh sun skirting along the edge of the horizon but not actually setting.

I like the Aurora replacing the moon at twilight/whatever. I'm gunna make so much art for this...
Noooooo, don't replace the moon, just teh stars or something. Otherwise we can't build from the ether into space in order to land on the moon.
triple size man, carries a tree in one hand and wears a robe (?)
idk, makes thumping footsteps (?)
he will just attack when you are seen mining the resources or attacking the mobs in the ether, its like a dimension guard man, that being said a counter version will be made for the nether ><
also, whoops >< but it seems excessive, month long twilight :/ but yeah, maybe it is :biggrin.gif:

I guess I should focus on my main cause, which is humans that can do more than wander aimlessly :>
also, I am kinda sketching a field boss for ether, I call it God (I feel very blasphemous right now, I am religious myself)
