The Ether is another dimension idea, like The Nether. it will be the opposite of "Hell": it will have the floating islands of indev. the portal creation might be a bit different, perhaps water instead of fire?
Post your ideas/suggestions on The Ether, or other dimension ideas!
It's a little to predictable. I'd rather see something a little more creative if there's a new realm added. The name isn't bad, but the concept needs be a little less predictable than "Opposite of the one that was just made".
how about instead of obsidian and fire, you need to build the portal out of hell blocks and use the lightstone on it, so that in order to get to the Ether, you have to visit the Nether first?
My first thought is gold, and something different for the core than fire. Maybe make the core somewhat tougher to find.
I'm all for more dimensions, and I like the idea of floating islands but it seems sort of obvious. "well hey, they made hell the Nether, so let's add heaven the Ether!" I'm not complaining about the concept. Just the timing.

Notch-o cheese to debut in b1.6, along with Herobrine and dragons.
How about instead of an obsidian portal, you had to make large cloth pentagram and you needed to place books and torches on each point of the pentagram and the pentagon in the center would turn into a portal.
That reminds me, we totally need marble. Maybe you can get it by smelting smooth stone?
Naw, just make it a new block. Maybe rare as natural obsidian, and only half as hard to mine.
But there is no natural obsidian. It only occurs when a waterfall flows into a pool or lava.
Besides, that'd make it too rare; obsidian as it is is pretty easy to get because it can be created by any idiot with a bucket of water and enough balls to go down there.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
Guys, LIGHTSTONE BLOCKS. It just freaking makes sense. Stop in the Nether, find and mine a TON of Lightstone, and then make a portal the same as you would to The Nether, but with Lightstone blocks instead of obsidian.
I never thought of it being like heaven, and i don't like the idea of it having to be high above ground. And i never considered it being peaceful, i was thinking jet nautali! that would be fun...
also, on the topic of chalk: how about smelting clay to make marble? its not that accurate, but it could work.
When The Nether was first announced, the second thought I had was why settle just for hell. There should be a counterpart. I was thinking that if he was to make this, it should be more complex then difficult to obtain. Here was what i was imaging.
You have to grow 4 trees side by side.
Cut a door hole in it. and add water to the top of the hole

Then place source lava on the ground

which then becomes an obsidian base

The water itself becomes the door. Instead of obsidian if it is implemented is the floating block material.
As for mobs, two come to mind, lighting sprites that zap you if they get too close and some sort of flying cupid/fairy shooting arrows
thats my two cents.

~English is my FIRST language, sorry if I make any grammar/spelling mistakes!~
It's next to impossible to get that many trees to grow side by side without interfering with each other's growth. Also, your lava would set yoru trees on fire.
Seriously. LIGHT STONE. It gives off light, BRIGHT LIGHT. Found in Hell, so you have to go through the rough stuff to get to the nice stuff. If you had a huge portal that glowed brightly with a light gold tint, where do you think it would lead?
Why does everyone think the ether will be nice? Its floating islands, which will kill you if you fall, and jet nautali flying around which will knock you off!
I actually really like this idea. I made this mob before reading about the Ether, but I think it totally fits. I'm going to do some thinking about the Ether and post some fleshing out for it here soon. I'm a fan.
I'm going to copy and paste my post from that thread as well:
The Ether wouldn't be quite so friendly if it only consisted of floating islands, lots of tenuously hanging sand that can drop in a huge cascade whenever struck(even once) and doesn't have anything between you and the void.
no, wait. not monsters. the Ether shouldn't have monsters, Just WIND. Think about it, you're on a bunch of floating islands, probably trying to build 1 block wide bridges across to connect islands when BAM! Gust of wind just blows you right off the edge if you haven't set up a railing to prevent you from sliding in that direction. I love the idea of falling back into the overworld realm. You'd still have a chance if you fell over water, but otherwise SPLAT.
Some ideas: (I will add some graphics and better explanations later)
Creature(s): Tempest - Imagine the age old representation of a face in the clouds blowing wind angrily. This guy will attempt to blow you off high places. He could also try to hit you with lightning. Not sure how you would defeat him or what he would drop. I'll have to think about that. Any suggestions? I'll also make a Mob suggestion thread when I make a model for the idea.
Equipment: Stone Boots - Uses the same template as normal boots but with stone. These heavy boots would weigh you down and give you resistance to being pushed around by wind. However, it would also make you slower normally.
Spawning: Instead of monsters spawning in the darkness, they spawn in high light. The sun graphic could be enlarged to be huge and ever present. The light could be so bright as to reduce visibility like what people experience in the arctic.
If you want to make a secure shelter, you'll have to create shade to prevent monsters from spawning in your home.
EDIT: Purdied up the language so as not to sound like a dummy.
DARKSTONE: opposite of lightstone, makes an area of light that SPAWNS enemies constantly (well, same rate as a cave at night), very hard to mine
QUICK BRICK: when you walk on it you go either 1.5x or 2.0x faster
CHAOS RUNE:(just thought of this one right now) when you craft one light stone and dark stone together you get a chaos ruin, basically add it with a stick to create a healing ward, then place the ward where ever and if you get hurt you walk into the radius of the ward and it heals you.
EDIT: also the chaos ward-healing ward: it will damage enemies at the same rate it heals :biggrin.gif:
Light - The light could be so bright as to reduce visibility. See: White out.
Fortification - The concept around making a secure base would be reducing light in a solid structure. Hostile mobs could spawn in only high light areas.
Yes, I love this concept, have it so there is still a day/night cycle, but "night" is as bright as day, and "day" is so bright that it's just as hard to see as it is when it's night in the overworld.
Trees should also grow PARTICULARLY tall when planted in the ether. Instead of water evaporating instantly like in the Nether, Fire will never work, and Lava will instantly turn into obsidian when placed on the ground do to low oxygen atmosphere and chill climate.
Since fire never works, you can never build a Nether portal in the Ether. Also rather than fire, pouring a bucket of water into a Portal built from lightstone blocks should be how the Ether portal is activated.
If you pour water in the ether and it spills over the edge and into the void, it will generate a water spring block in the corresponding location in the sky of the overworld that cannot be picked up in a bucket or displaced by a block.
Also, the ratio of Ether to overworld should be 1:16 or 1:32 instead of the Nether's 1:8.

Floating islands? Do want.
