I flipping LOVE the idea of ghost pirates! I played Wind Waker, Phantom hourglass, and Spirit Tracks although the last one sucked. I think that maybe there should be different classes of ships. Maybe there could be like a HUGE boss ship, and maybe there could be a small rowboat. If there are pirates though, then there needs to be merchants as well, and you can like, protect them in exchange for iron or gold or mossy cobblestone. Eventually, there should be, like, Towns included in this, that have like shipping docks and all. Then it would turn into a mod as big as the aether. Gigantic towns, pirates, merchants, people to protect. I've gone a bit overly zelda on this but who cares!
2. Waves: Exclusive to the ocean (maybe on lakes IF we got weather), like tides but much, much more short term. A quick little splash and It is done. Possibly surfing? Also, tsunamis. If we get disasters, after an earthquake a tsunami has a 30% chance of appearing on the beaches, declining 5% every 30 seconds after the shaker. This would not be a large wave, this would be a WALL. It would blast away every thing and that includes players, trees, dirt (to some lengths) and even stone.
Actually I think a shorter (and possibly slightly slanted) wall about say 5 blocks high? More importantly it stays at that height (slanting gradually off into the ocean) for a good while and pushes submerged entities downwards and breaaks doors and ladders. I know it doesn't sound like much but just imagine some of the cities you see that are built at sea level and a 5 block rise in ocean level!
Also on all my main SSP worlds my house would be screwed if such a event was to occur... Time to build a sea wall.

"Terminator like robots may one day rule the world, as long as they don't run Windows Vista"
Funny story. I was going to post a "make the oceans easier and more worthwhile to explore" topic, but it turns out someone already thought of it. A lot of someones. This is, what, the 76th page?
Anyway, I love you guys. I love oceans in real life, so it's sad that they're currently so worthless in Minecraft.
The thing, though... People have suggested things like submarines with harpoon launchers, underwater villages, diving suits, diving bells, diving helmets, oxygen tanks, krakens, pirates, ghost ships, whales, glowing coral, realistic pressure, tides, etcetera etcetera etcetera. These things are fun on their own, but not only are some of them huge programming challenges, but, well, adding so many complex elements might spoil the fun of Minecraft, you know? I consider MC to be beautiful in its simplicity.
Um. Ahem. Anyway, I'd like to just condense what we're all thinking into one basic, minimalistic package of what Oceancraft ought to be:
BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR OCEANCRAFT:
Breathing apparatus
Lots of ideas are workable, but my favorite is the idea of some sort of diving helmet. I think the simplest way to do it would be to use the crafting pattern for a basic helmet using glass blocks, or a combination of glass and iron. I imagine it would look a bit like you were wearing a goldfish bowl over your head. While wearing the helmet, your oxygen would go down really slowly, lasting you 5, maybe 10 minutes. Since regular helmets can already be enchanted with "Respiration", maybe these diving helmets could be enchanted to extend your air time?
I think it wouldn't be that hard to code, since the code used to wear pumpkins on your head (yes, you can do that) could likely just be restyled to work with a diving helmet. As for slowing down oxygen consumption, that's just changing a variable.
At least one new underwater mob
Sure, we have squid, but you can't eat them or anything. I'm thinking some kind of basic fish, maybe the size of a chicken, that you could get meat from. Again, bare minimum, and I have nothing against edible jellyfish or something.
Coral and sponges
Coral because a Minecraft ocean would just need at least one unique building block, you know? Sponges because if you're going to build an enclosed space under the sea, you're going to need to empty it of water.
These would be enough for a determined, none-too-picky player. But for real ocean lovers...
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR OCEANCRAFT
At least one HOSTILE underwater mob
Like a shark or an orca or an eel or a giant squid or something. This isn't a "bare minimum requirement" because for some players, just keeping from drowning would be enough of a challenge. But it would sure be cool.
And if you're going to have underwater hostiles, you're going to need...
An underwater weapon
Like a harpoon or a spear or a trident. A harpoon sounds like the best idea, especially if you can go and retrieve it or use string or something to make it retractable.
Underwater terrain features
Someone posted another topic about both how beaches should make a comeback and how ocean terrain should be fixed in general. That person had the right idea. Me, I love the idea of a deep trench or an abyssal plain.

Do I have to say this again? [respiration enchant for helmet] *sigh*
Fantastic ideas! I would love to see this implemented into vanilla minecraft. My ideas?
You should be able to see fish before you reel them in w/ the fishing rod, and manually kill them w/ your fists or whatever manly weapon you use.
Bioluminescent mobs at the bottom of the ocean?
Some kind of underwater-only super awesome ore (But not a game breaker, I hate those mods that are all like HURP DUH DERP! UNBREAKABLE BEADROCK TOOLS! Or whatever.).
Submarines. If Steve can make a boat, he can make a submarine.
Glowstone Torches. Put a glowstone block over a stick on the crafting grid to make 4 glowstone torches, wich produce a light level of 15. Water shouldn't wash away redstone torches or my hypothetical glowstone torches, because they use electricity/magic to produce light an cannot be put out like fire based light can.
Water that looks like water instead of liquid lapis.

just an idea but you could add a giant sea serpent that could be super rare and have 1000 hearts that if you kill it drops scales you can use to make weapons and armor and there's only one of at a time or you could add a kracken
KRACKEN! actually.... that would scare the crap out of me O.e a random tentacle slowly creeping tword me through the darkness of the water..... and if it manages to grab you, a struggling animation would start. if it manages to get you close to its beak (its mouth) an opening and closing animatoin starts happenting with the beak, it would be sortof cool if it glowed slightly so you can see he actoin :tongue.gif: though sorry for the long post just a mob idea :biggrin.gif:
I dont know if this is in the post but waves would be awesome if you like had a surf board but this is toataly awesome can not wait untill its finished

Wait, when can I download?
Ahem, Orcas aren't aggressive.
Its not availible for download. There are modders working on this, but for now, this is just a thread of ideas.
