So, my idea is that, to add an extra "survival" type element, I think that food (stew, meat, etc.) should eventually expire. Similarly, there would be a system (like a fridge) to stop it from doing so.
HOW EXPIRED FOODS SHOULD ACT:
Expired foods should either disappear or change appearance (maybe seem green and moldy).
IF the food changes appearance, it should also behave differently (like not heal a player or heal a very minimal amount, or even damage or kill a player. It could also make him sick, making him glow green and lose health over time).
HOW TO KEEP FOODS LONGER:
I think refridgerators should work like a mixture of a fuurnace and a chest. What I mean is that there should be a pretty large storage capacity, BUT for it to actually keep foods cool, it would need to be fueled by ice (or something similar).
Similar to furnaces, there should be a meter that fills up, so that players can know when the refridgerator needs more ice.
Similar to chests, fridge blocks should increase in capacity when stacked VERTICALLY (instead of horizontaly).
Also, fridges could cool foods without needing to constantly be powered, but the crafting recipe should look different.
HOW TO CRAFT A FRIDGE:
I think that the recipe for a fridge should look like this:
[]
For a fridge that cools foods indefinetely, the recipe should look like this (where is ice):
WHEN FOODS EXPIRE:
I think that foods should expire after one IN-GAME week without being cooled by a refridgerator. Once the food item is placed in the refrigerator and removed, the timer for expiration should reset.
That is the end of my suggestion. Thank you for reading this far!
How long would a block of ice keep the contained resources cool? Would other "cool" resources work, such as snow blocks, snow balls, and even water? Would you be able to stack the cooling resources like you are able to stack fuel in a furnace?
I think it would be better if you just had to store food in a room of a certain temperature. In a hot or room temerature area, meat and fish would spoil. I'd make it so that underground, in the stone layer, it is cold. That way you could dig a cellar in dry climates where you can't get ice or snow to chill the room. Otherwise you'd have to used salt or saltpetre to preserve the food.

Sorry for the late reply, I just felt like re-visiting this post.
