I rather like the idea of something to help you in singleplayer, especially with the creepers being silent and all (curse you creeper! You blew up mah house!)
However, what if you could have a constructable Golem as an ally, and a naturally spawning one as an enemy. Now, before people start complaining and/or try to roast me over an open flame, hear me out
1. The friendly Golem can have melee/ranged weapons (Melee = swords, shovels, axes, whatever). The enemy Golem would only spawn as a melee enemy, like the zombie (because everything on the friendly golem is crafted, and idk if zombies can craft items)
2. Friendly Golem would have some armor, yes, but because of its composite nature, it would not be as tough as, say, the player. The friendly golem is akin to a guard dog - and guard dogs are much, much easier to take out than a body guard (maybe friendly golem have 3/4 player health? 1/2?). The enemy Golem, however, would be made out of a single type of material (stone, snow, iron, etc., etc.) and it would only be as tough as the base material (snow golems = easy pushovers, iron golems = WHY WON'T IT DIE).
3. A redstone-powered Guard Golem would be a bit overpowered, because Redstone technically has no limit in energy. If the Golem were powered by, say, Wood or Coal, that would mean that periodically the Golem would stop in place, and not move an inch until it's refueled.
4. And finally.....there's nothing better than something to draw the Creepers away from you.
my responses to your points. I cannot thank you enough for paying attention to the original suggestion and not attempting to hijack the thread. your suggestions are very reasonable, and i would just like to make some responses to your points
2. You make a good point, but the golemn will be using the zombie AI, which means that it would be very easy to kill by spiders, creepers and skeletons, and not worth the rare materials unless it had enough hp to tank all the damage they would cause it enough to be useful. the worse offender would be creepers, because the golemn would always run at it. i guess the code farm animals use to run away could be recylcled when the golemn sees a creeper.
3. golemns are powered by any fuel you can find (wood coal lava ect). red stone forms their circuits, not their power source. they will shut down when out of fuel but will still be kill-able. the code used to determine if they are active is the same code used by furnaces to determine if flames appear on the door if there is fuel inside
4. that's one of many possible trap uses, if you have the resources for it.
I really don't want Golems in Minecraft. There's already slimes, zombies, skeletons and spiders. They are all very clichéd but I can deal with that as it is. However, if Notch adds golems, with the exeption of the creeper he's just plainly running through the list of totally clichéd rpg enemies. What's after that? Bats and giant scorpions? Then black magicians? And then you make different elemental versions. Lava spiders and ice golems? How old is **** like that?
It's damned lame. Part of the reason why I'm not much in role-playing games or fantasy in general. No matter how complicated the stuff you come up with is, it's still all so damned contrived.
1. [u]Its not an ememy![u] why do people keep saying it is? its an ALLY! OTHER PEOPLE KEEP SAYING ITS AN ENEMY
2. what else would you suggest to be a build-able helper?
Ok, ok.
Anything but a golem. A tin man perhaps
a good idea, but at the same time that would limit its building possibilities. metal is considered a "stone" but stone isn't considered a metal.

A tin man? seriously? how is that any different from a golem? It's still an animated humaniod made of a lifeless material.
But I would like some permanent beneficial mob that doesn't die of age/disappear. I kept caging sheep but they never grow back wool and they eventually disappear. I wouldn't really need a guard unless it was for multiplayer but then there's no damage in multiplayer from what I've heard.
I joined just to suggest this. i wasnt even lurking before.
yours seems more complex, with commands needed to guide the automaton. this is simply building a mindless armored zombie, and therefore much easier on notch. the idea behind this one was the ability to add in allys with as little new code as possible.
When it comes to coding, at least in my experience, if you're going to do something, you may as well do it properly. If you do something with the minimal amount of work, you're going to regret it later. Interaction with something to give a menu can be reused elsewhere, for example if other friendly NPCs were later introduced, or even in multiplayer as a GUI to interact with another player for secure trade (like we're gonna need that, but still) or adding as friends, or sending private messages.
Not to mention a menu isn't that hard to code. I'm not familiar with what's being used to build the game, but the languages I do know, it's not hard. For the AI we'd use, that's nothing new either. Follow code from the zombies, attack from zombies/skeletons. Patrol code needs a new entity, which is the patrol point, and then you do follow>patrolpoint, on arrival you do follow>startpoint.
Failing that, remove the patrol option and we're set.
Here's a really fun thing that can be done with golems / automatons. Give them bows and stick them in minecarts!
my purpose for keeping the code as simple as possible is well...simple.
you find posts that are things like "LOL LET US BUILD GAINT ROBATS" and they have no code to back them up. my best guess is that notch doesnt even bother with such threads because its a radical idea that has no basis in the current engine. my idea, while radical (yet balanced) actually is backed up by code. since I have no idea how the minecraft engine operates other than a basic understanding of universal code, I figured i could still could back it up with code I already know exists within the game.
It's a good idea, but if I was in the situation describe in the first post, I would just turn the difficulty to peaceful for a sec and turn it back to normal so that all the current spawned monsters disappear and restart spawning. But if you don't want to, it's your choice.
I am 1000000% in favor of golems in minecraft. However, I would like to propose a somewhat different system, and possibly hijack the thread.
Golems can be found naturally in the game, in a inactive state. They would remain like this until the player uses a "Golem soul" item on them. Golem souls are found in dungeon chests, and are about as rare as an apple. Upon using a soul on a golem, a menu pops up with two options: "Follow me", and "Guard here". Golems ordered to follow will follow the player like a zombie, though they won't attack. Golems ordered to guard will stand in one spot, not wandering until any mob comes within its sensory range. The golem will follow the mob as you described, and when if it kills the mob it will return to its original position, ignoring all other mobs until it comes back to the guarded block. From there, its guard A.I is reactivated. It has 8 hearts of health, and deals three damage.
This system, while somewhat more complex, should still be within reason, just make its return A.I think the guarded block is an enemy. I think this should shut up the people who complain about them being too powerful or too easy to mass produce, as they spawn randomly throughout the world without being created by the player, and can only be controlled if the player get lucky when the world creates a dungeon. While one could amass an army, it would take ages, and since golems can only move as fast as zombies it would be pointless. The first golem to spot the enemy would be the one to kill it, and any others who spot it would basically be rendered useless until the mob is dead.
The only way to effectively use a group would be to station them around the perimeter. Useful, but not a war machine.
Worx for meh. Make em slaves. Git meh dirts. hur hur hur
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Proudly wanting Classic Alpha to truly become Survival Alpha. Mobs killing blocks, ridiculously powerful beasts, and insanely unfair gameplay. Classic Alpha is boring. I want SURVIVAL alpha! Eh? Eh? ***** all you want.
I'm going to turn this idea backwards and be more reasonable.
Bad Guy Mobs called Golems that only appear in tunnels. Kill it, earn 3-5 of the material the Golem is. So like, a Stone Golem (the most common and weakest) will drop 3-5 Stone Blocks. Iron Golems drop Iron, Gold drop Gold and Diamond Golems (the hardest to defeat and rarest to find) drop Diamond.

not yet another enemy mob
Since monsters usually dont (As far as ive seen), the golemn wont either because it uses
slightly altered enemy AI that ignores you and attacks other monsters.

This is a nice bit of suggestion, and not a thread hijack. The idea of the golemn souls and dungeons would solve the problem of them being too common. Thank you for your idea, and thank you for suggesting it without hijacking the thread.
My only problem is that, at least in my (Very very expansive) travels, I have never chanced upon a dungeon but once, and the spawned spiders inside murdered me miles away from my spawn. Dungeons are very very rare instances (At least until the biomes update, which may make them their own biome) and the feature might be too underpowered for the trouble you go through if its that hard to find one and that difficult to conquer its location.

Sorry, im just a bit agitated after a few users came in during the early parts of the thread and tried to turn it into a new enemy mob suggestion thread, which completely defeats the entire reason the golem would even be added (The first build able friendly mob)
I feel I should clarify my idea; golems would not be buildable. They would spawn randomly in a dormant state, and only be activated by a soul. They can be destroyed, so you can kill them if you have no soul. Wait...
