I think Minecraft really needs a way to leave a "breadcrumb trail", or a piece of string, or something that is very very very easily obtainable (perhaps even an infinite amount?) so it's harder to get completely lost inside a very complex cave system. It would probably be best if it was a "non-solid" block type, and could contrast nicely with every other block so you could tell where it was placed.
I know you could use signs, redstone dust, or even minecart tracks to achieve the same effect, but what about something that is much easier to get? I wandered into a cave yesterday and could not find my way out. I managed to figure my way out today using cobblestone drops, but that's a very inefficient system and took me a long time.
Perhaps the "breadcrumb" or "string" item, assuming it's an infinite amount, can also be "cleared" with one button?
I'm really new to Minecraft, thanks Notch for making such an awesome game!
However, it does come at the expense of not having your entire cave system lit up.
So long as you only place torches to your left/right, that means you KNOW the way back to the entrance... Just put the torches to your right/left and move forward.
cobblestone blocks. You can't move through them, but they're distinct: they are not natural except in dungeons. if you want, put a torch in the "out" direction as well. That's what I use currently. A designated method would be nice though.
If you take a look at THIS THREAD then you can find my idea for directional markers:

Red Direction Markers(x4): Crafting
Yellow Direction Markers(x4): Crafting
A Direction Marker can be placed on the ground or on walls, and its direction will depend on the angle it was placed from. (similar to signs, but able to adjust the direction even when placed on a wall) Right clicking on a direction marker that has already been placed (while holding a direction marker) will change its direction. This would allow players to mark paths they came from or plan to take, or even just indicate Cardinal Direction North for orientation purposes. It also would provide an actual use for flowers in crafting. Yellow Flowers crafted with sticks create Yellow Markers, and Red Flowers crafted with sticks create Red Markers, and both could be done on the fly without needing a workbench.
In the meantime you could gather and place red and yellow flowers as markers, though it might get a little confusing above ground, they should work pretty well in caves and tunnels.
Directional markers would serve the purpose, but wouldn't it be much easier to simply place a breadcrumb item on the ground? No need to mess with direction, getting in and out would be so much simpler.

Torches.
They work GREAT.
For the socially adept miner. It's free, so click it!

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?

Even with String that'd be hell.
The green stuff is also his cave system
Om nom... Nom, nom.
