I think we should have different kinds of arrowheads dealing different damage.
Wood Arrow: The very basic arrow, it would have slightly less capabilities than the one currently in use, but a wood tip, and faster.
Iron Arrow: It would be heavier, meaning it would have a smaller arc when shooting, but deal more damage than the regular one.
Gold Arrow: Used to make and arrow look good, like the weapons. It would have the same ability as the wood one.
Diamond Arrow: I think this would be an overpowered arrow, so maybe not add it?
Redstone Arrow: Sets hit target on fire, does no additional damage when hit. ( Credit to FentonAlpha )
Gunpowder Arrow: Explodes on hit target, can be used to clear blocks. Does 1/2 of TNT damage. ( If that's not too low )
They are all made the same way as the regular ones, but with different ingots or blocks at the top to make different ones, and there would be maybe 10 - 20 in a bundle.
I like the idea, but instead of placing a wood block at the tip have just a stick and a feather. When you're making an arrow without a tip you would generally just sharpen the tip of the shaft.

Good idea, that would make them easier to craft since they are weak.
Obsidian arrows have been suggested as a more powerful alternative to flint arrows. My suggestion was that to differentiate between arrows, the least powerful arrow would be used be default unless you put a set of stronger arrows directly in your main inventory.
hm, I don't think this would work so well. While you'd want more than just 4 arrows for your iron bar, 10/20 is way too much. It also makes arrows in general too easily made, since you can use just about any valuable resource for it. An extra slot next to the bow might work for choosing arrows, but you can only put a stack of 64 in it, while currently we can use every arrow we make in our inventory.

I think around 10 is an OK number, and 64 arrows would be plenty if they are iron. If not just keep an extra ammount in your inventory and pop them out when needed. If you're getting attacked, retreat a couple steps and reload.
if you had several different arrow types in your inventory how would the computer know which one to use?
Maybe a slot next to the bow or next to the armor slots.
@RepublicMiner Have you ever shot an unbalanced arrow be for? They don't work so well and they don't go nearly as far.
Good idea but that mechanic isn't in any other part of the game. idk Does the computer have your quick bar take priority over your inventory any other time?

Yar, but it could be added in. Not fully sure what you mean by your hotbar taking priority?
But there isn't a "ammo" spot. I'm not trying to just take down your idea, I was thinking about this myself and this is where I got stuck. Actually at this point I thought it would be easier to make different types of bows (Short bow, long bow, re-curve bow, crossbow) and have different characteristics to each bow (I won't explain any more because I don't want to derail your topic). So, I think diff bows would be easier to program with the system that is in place, however, if you where to change the system so you had an ammo slot (much like your armor slots) arrow types would work quite nicely.
@FentonAlpha haha I was thinking we should have some fire arrows. Make griefing easier though :/

Gotcha, Crosbow would be nice and it has been suggested many times. Different bows would be annoying to swap through and this comes to the same point, how would equipt which ones you want if you have multiple ones?

I did suggest it being weak, didn't think about it being faster, good idea however.

But with this you just put it in an ammo spot and it shoots that.
Brilliant, I also saw that a gunpowder tip was posted, so I'll repost it here incase you didn't see it. ( At the top now )

Yeah... griefing would increase for sure.
I pretty much make all my suggestions in a single-player mindset though.
It should definitely have a drawback like maybe it causes bow degradation so you can only fire 3 before needing a new bow.
I think it would make some cool war / siege scenarios though.

I was also thinking as in Singleplayer, but after reading this I thought maybe Redstone Arrows could only be used on mob?
